Since September of 2019, the pop star and inaugural American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson has been hosting a daily daytime-TV talk show. She rules at that job, and her covers of random-ass songs, with a new one happening on every episode, are a constant delight. Clearly, people have noticed what Clarkson is doing, and she’ll soon have company. Today, we learn that Jennifer Hudson — pop star, former American Idol contestant, Oscar winner — is also getting her own daily daytime TV talk show.

Variety reports that The Jennifer Hudson show is coming to Fox stations this fall. It’ll be the new flagship talk show for Warner Bros. TV now that Ellen DeGeneres is wrapping up her extremely long run on her own show. Last fall, Hudson shot a test episode of her show on the Ellen stage, with Ellen executive producers Andy Lassner and Mary Connelly running the show. Telepictures, the production company behind Ellen, is now doing The Jennifer Hudson Show. All of this would suggest that Jennifer Hudson, who recently played Aretha Franklin in the biopic Respect, is essentially serving as the new Ellen. Hopefully, Hudson won’t be an asshole to her employees!

This whole thing makes a lot of sense. Jennifer Hudson is a hugely likable and talented person, and like Kelly Clarkson before her, she’s comfortable with the rigors of live-performance TV. Somewhere, Ruben Studdard and Taylor Hicks are really hoping that every famous-ish Idol alum will get a shot at their own TV show.
