Huge Merritt fan over here. He doesn't really have a bad album, though Realism is mediocre. I also LOVE Showtunes. Anyhow, here's my top 5:
1. 60 love songs
2. The Charm of the Highway Strip
3. Hyacinths And Thistles
4. Holiday
5. Get Lost
Kurt was not only a fabulous songwriter and performer, in my book the greatest one of his generation, but also a brave, deeply informed listener with no prejudice towards any kind of music. He was the one who taught me how to listen to music, from Daniel Johnston to Swans, from REM to Gary Numan, he was my first and only idol, god damned, adulthood started for me when he died and I just wish I was 15 again when I discovered Nevermind in a house full of awed metalheads. He was the real thing.
"The ability to take the two most boring songs from Lemonade, with bonus spoken-word excursions, and make them the basis for something absolutely astonishing? "
WORD. They were so amazing live that I didn't even recognised them.
Well, to say that something sounds dated or not is never an absolute evolution: it always depend on the time from which you're making the judgement. Today, I agree, they do not sound dated. But tomorrow, they might.
This is so sad news. There have been rumors lately about A new record involving Questlove and other great musicians, I was really looking forward to that. George Michael never seemed silly to me because he pretty much guide my way through my own personal music discovery since my ten years old or so. I loved Wham, his solo albums, he was there stealing the show in that Freddie Mercury tribute at Wembley, his songs have always been with me throughout my life. I am truly devasted.
