Good Lord, how I absolutely hate this record: the production is an absolute mess (no dynamic range AT ALL), which (at least to my ears) absolutely kills a fusion (psychedelia + dance music) that really depends of the depths of its sonic textures in order to create any emotional of physical response to its listeners. I am bummed.
This is a thoughtful and beautifully written countdown. I tend to agree with most of it, though I must confess there are 3 albums from Wonder that I have never listened to and all of them are ranked on the bottom 5 of the list (which is a bummer coz it would have been great to have missed a gem). Number 1 & 2 to me indisputable, but I would really exchange Keys (which I think is so damned irregular) for Fulfillingness at #3. Stevie Wonder was one of my most important musical discoveries of my young adulthood and it was damned hard to force myself into his oeuvre due to the the Woman In Red OST curse that traumatised my adolescence. A sheer musical genius.
Ok, let's be accurate on this one. The only officially unreleased track here is the Minneapolis version of “Lily, Rosemary, And The Jack Of Hearts" ("Tangled Up In Blue" and "Idiot Wind" early versions were included on The Bootleg Series vol. 1-3).
"Maybe some people will say that El-P is being ridiculous, and that NERVO acolytes should be allowed to do whatever they want with their hands in the name of fandom." - Count me in.
We have NEVER heard "Cry Me A River Williamsburg Sleeve Tattoo Blues". That's the second time Stereogum says otherwise. This one is just another amazing track, Universal Themes is going to be huge.
I feel you. It may end up NOT being the most sonically creative album of the year, but it's definitely one that really draws our attention to its sonic texture. I think there's a lot of hate for Tyler, which is a shame, because I feel that lots of people are missing his great work. Wolf, for instance, was already a very detailed and creative record production-wise. I feel you, Devon, I really do.
It was very touching, wasn't it? A real and beautiful snapshot into their intimacy. But Tyler's video is obviously great, that dude is building a very strong and coherent videography.
Ok, my bad. When I read it, it really felt like it. And re-reading both what you wrote and my comment, it seems now pretty obvious that it was me who was out of line. Sorry, Catlin. And rock and roll.
"That’s without even mentioning Courtney Love is her mom." Caitlin, what kind of info or insight do you have to write such a terrible thing about Courtney's role as a parent? What an unfortunate thing to say.
