I know you as a regular Haunting The Chapel commenter, so will note: No metal here. Consider the stuff I do via HTC as dark HEAVY bands to watch on a weekly basis! (FYI: New Altar Of Plagues tomorrow...)
Cool, will check that out. I've written about Extra Life in the past: I called them a Band To Watch in 2008. Good stuff. Have also written about Cultus Sabbati. But they'd more likely show up in my metal column than on this list, which is intended to be bands existing outside of noise, metal, etc.
I accept your hate, it only makes me stronger.
But yeah, pretty amazing metal lineup this year! We sorta owe Fred/BBG for that. Dude was a real workhorse down there.
You know, Trap Them canceled/pulled out of the show I was planning to catch them at, so we never crossed paths. Lame. They're the only band I missed who I'd really wanted to see. According to friends who did see them, though, the songs sounded great/the vibe was as intense as you'd expect/hope.
Ha ha, of course it is, but I went to Catholic School for a bit and, you know, you *can* abbreviate saints as "St." I plan to see them tonight, by the way... Currently letting my ears rest after catching KEN Mode, Cough, Magrudergrind, Gaza, and Wormrot.
Thanks for posting that... I'm at SXSW, so a little behind on things. I think I wrote a couple hundred or so reviews for P4K? Maybe a bit more than 200. Sort of insane in retrospect.
Well, the idea is to offer a different (or second) take on a predominant opinion/critical strain regarding particular albums.
But your idea's an interesting one, definitely. Maybe I'll use that angle for one of these.
Hey Peter. Will do. My head is clogged with the present right now, but when I have some time, I'll come up with a list like this. Currently, I've be listening to a ton of Jesus Lizard. I always loved Liar best, though I realize people usually cite Goat (great as well). I also listen to Laughing Hyenas' Crawl EP at least once a week. Maybe that's a start? (Heavy in a different way: Tons of Codeine these past few weeks. Pair those albums with Winter's Into Darkness and Eternal Frost...)
Sadly that likely won't happen -- they've been releasing great records for the better part of a decade. Though would be excellent if the frequency shifted...
Haunting The Chapel is whatever I happen to be listening to at the moment. If you've followed my stuff here for the past year and a half and my old column Show No Mercy at Pitchfork (which started in 2006), you'll know I just happen to listen to a lot of black metal. That said, as Matt points out, there's plenty of non-black metal in the archives. And look for upcoming stuff on Trap Them, Indian, Batillus, KEN mode, etc., alongside Pale Chalice, Altar Of Plagues, et al.
The "trend whores" thing is funny, though.
Sirs: "New Album is a Japan-only release that has entirely different versions of 4 songs from Attention Please [including the version of "Party Boy" posted above]. It also has different versions of 2 songs from Heavy Rocks (2011): "Jackson Head" and "Tu, la la"."
Thanks. Between this and my joke about Vampire Weekend fans liking Paul Simon being taken seriously by New York magazine, I think I need to go to comedian school.
You could also check out Mantic Ritual, Violator, Municipal Waste, Vindicator, etc. I'm posting some "blackened thrash" later today. I tend to prefer that stuff.
