I'm In Your Mind Fuzz if the best closely followed by Nonagon Infinity. Than it's probably Polygon/Flying Microtonal Banana or Murder of the Universe if you want more like the first two but with a storyline for some reason
That's a very weird method to compare albums, and in any way, The Suburbs (The Song) is better than Reflektor (The Song, but also all of The Album) so your comparison is null
I love Creature Comfort, it sounded incredible when I saw them debut it live and I like it even better on the record. I also like Signs of Life but I know that for some reason that's more controversial (commence the rap jokes). There are at least 6 great songs on this album and while that probably isn't good enough for Arcade Fire that's still fine overall. It's not like they turned POP ETC. or something
I'm sure this is hyperbole but I honestly feel bad for anyone who thinks this. A band that made 3 masterpieces and a fourth very-good-to-great album, wrote some of the best songs of the last two decades, who are one of the greatest live acts on the planet right now and one bland release is enough to undo all of that? come the fuck on
It's fine. Their weakest release by a wide margin but it's a pleasent listen overall. Some songs are top form Arcade Fire, some are just great (We Don't Deserve Love, Electric Blue and Creature Comfort in particular).
The middle stretch is indeed insufferable (I don't have a real beef with Chemistry, I'm talking about Infinite Content which is just awful), and I don't think anyone will remember this album in a year or two, but I really believe that it's just a very OK album that would have been recieved much better had it not been attached to a completely insufferable marketing campaign. The (non-fidget-spinner-or-office-supplies-related) merch surrounding this release is great though
I went with my friend who is one of the biggest fanboys on Earth and he fucking LOVED it. I saw him just burst with joy through the whole film and he watched it twice more since. So basically I'm saying #notallfanboys
Yeah what the fuck? I was glad to see Grizzly Bear on the album list just to realize I voted for them in SOTY and Vince in albums. Where the hell is Big Fish
Even without Kanye (and LCD Soundsystem who got 2nd place that year but already had a SOTY before) there are 10 songs on The Monitor (P4K's 10th best of 2010) that are better than Round and Round
Don't think that's it. Pitchfork had an in-depth "get to know Brockhampton" article on the Pitch just last month. Besides, Kanye tweeted almost the same thing and still got 5th place last year
Here's the thing: Pitchfork didn't use to be the mainstream. It was big and influential, sure, but it always poised itself as the alternative, and used to shed light on a lot more "experimental" or "difficult" albums on their year-end roundups. For the past few years, and noticeably so since the Condé Nast acquisition, they became a lot more aligned with the mainstream.
I don't care about the shtick most of the time, I care about the tunes. Fear Fun had them, ILY,H had some, and the new album has maybe 2-3 good songs and the rest just kind of draaaaaaag.
Look, not every single "big" indie band that released an album deserves to be on the list (ex. Spoon who had two of the year's best songs but their album overall is not really good enough, especially compared to their other albums), but the (almost) complete disregard for the genre that Pitchfork helped champion and made them the authority they are considered to be just because "liking music made by white dudes" isn't cool in 2017 is just ridiculous
