I like making fun of RHCP as much as the next guy, but Blood Sugar Sex Magik alone has 17 songs that don't suck and are basically 90s classics. They're pretty bad nowadays but up to Californication (and even By the Way) they were pretty great! They're also more fun to kick back to then a lot of other bands from that era
It's also on youtube, in case you can't/don't want to have to download that interview - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=799I89T4OjE
It's my least favorite of the 4 songs we've heard, but I feel this could work greatly in the album flow, like some tracks on Since I Left You were great as part of a sequence but not necessarily by themselves
Will def. check it out, thanks for recommending!
I finally listened to that PUP album, had to instantly replay it. So fucking good. Going to have to change my list soon...
Incredible album ,I guess the other one you like is Heavy Rocks, which is one my favorite.
I actually fucking love Boris even though I find a lot of their drone-y stuff unlistenable. But they are an incredible band when they decide to do their stoner/thrashy thing
I've never listened to Pantha du Prince but I saw him play the new album live two weeks ago and it was fucking great. Might have to check that album out
I have no idea how I forgot about fka Viet Cong (their forgettable new name may have helped), but that one is near the top of the anticipated list. Brand New should also be there, except we have no indication of that every happening. Hope to be surprised
Yeah, they're heading on a small reunion tour soon, which is fucking awesome. Terrorhawk is one of my all time favorite albums. It never grows old. Catamaran is one of the greatest album openers of all time
I'm with you on that, although based on reports from his show(s) at Primavera his live show this year is incredible and would have probably made me instantly like that album a lot more
I think it was black sheep boy who wrote about it on last year's AOTY list. There are some artists who are just so consistently good they keep getting overlooked and forgotten although they keep upping themselves. The one that comes to mind for me is Thee Oh Sees who have been pumping consistently amazing albums since 2013 that are somehow never mentioned on any lists. Hopefully this year it's going to change!
My favorite is Tapes & Money, but the one that grabbed me originally was Household Goods. Garden is also fucking perfect. I could keep naming songs all day though
The month up to Radiohead was crazy! We got Beyonce, Drake (yeah, it ended up being trash, but still), Skepta AND James Blake all in a couple weeks. Then Radiohead came on and managed to blow everything else out of the water
I have to admit that that Deftones album went completely over my head, not because it isn't good, just because of how stacked the year has been. Will fix that immediately though
Haven't listened to Hesitation Wounds, White Lung, PUP, and those two Melvins albums yet, but I really need to get around to that. Think I'm going to have a face-smashing weekend
You might like Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs. Some of his songs evoke the same feeling you described, at least for me, and his (incredible and overlooked) album Trouble was one of my personal favorite 2012 releases
Also, most anticipated for the rest of the year:
LCD Soundsystem (hopefully!), The Avalanches, At the Drive-In, ScHoolboy Q, Danny Brown, Thee Oh Sees, Dinosaur Jr., Beck, Kanye West (lol yeah right), This Town Needs Guns (don't miss out on this. the teasers have been phenomenal), Daughters (they've been teasing shit on FB so who knows), Bear vs. Shark (hoping that reunion will bring some more music!)
1. Radiohead - A Moon Shaped Pool
2. Kendrick Lamar - untitled unmastered.
3. Kanye West - The Life of Pablo
4. James Blake - The Colour in Anything
5. Woods - Sun Eater in the River of Light
6. Weezer - White Album
7. Car Seat Headrest - Teens of Denial
8. Beyonce - Lemonade
9. David Bowie - Blackstar
10. King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Nonagon Infinity
Other favorites in no particular order: Ty Segall, M83, Skepta (seriously, that album is banging), Kaytranada, Iggy Pop, Last Shadow Puppets (I liked it!)
I gave you a thumbs up for your list and Danny Brown but a big vocal NO about James Blake. It's fantastic album and I'm extremely bummed about it being really overlooked because it dropped so close to Radiohead. Timeless is top 5 SOTY contender
Just yesterday I watched the Groovy Tony video again and remembered how creepy those blank faces were. I love this cover, and based on the 2 singles we've heard this is going to bang hard. This + new Danny Brown are going to dominate the rest of the year
