Oh and I just found out maybe 30 minutes ago that I had won 2 tickets to a Freddie Gibbs show next month through some radio giveaway! Pretty sure I was the only one who entered it. Still awesome! Pretty psyched for that
I totally get what you mean. Funny story - when I was 14 I was super into NIN and metal and my and my friend used to go to this cd store in the mall next to us to try and impress the clerks. One time we got into conversation with them about NIN and Filter and he said "y'know what,I have something you might like", and he popped out Ministry's "Greatest Fits" compilation. I had no idea who they were and he tried to convince me that it wad a very rare CD so I just got it. I totally didn't know what I was hearing! It was so evil and dark and whatnot. And I liked a lot of it! I obviously liked Jesus Built My Hotrod more than anything else but I felt pretty badass listening to it, but than I went back to listening to Megadeth and forgot about them for years. I really appreciate that clerk now though, he was into some dark shit
Record Store Day already started here today because tomorrow is Shabbes and most places are closed. They call it just "Record Day" here because we have maybe 5 record stores in all of the country. Anyway, I went to this record market that had free beer and got way drunk and suddenly realized I had just bought the 2xLP reissue of QoTSA's self titled and In Rainbow (finally on vinyl!!) without noticing. I don't regret it at all though! They sounded fantastic. Tomorrow I'll be off to another store to see if they have any interesting RSD releases and maybe get some more shit for the sake of it.
What are y'all planning to get tomorrow?
DUDE. "The Take" into "I See in the Dark" is a fucking amazing 1-2 punch,I couldn't really gather anything that came after on that album. Even on my 6th listen through.
jk, that whole album is the tits
Evil Empire might have been the second CD I ever bought, about 10 years ago maybe? I was 13 and knew maybe 2 Rage songs and could barely understand what the fuck they were rapping about but they rocked SO GOD DAMN HARD. I thought Tom Morello was god for the longest time! ZDLR is still one of my all-time-favorite rappers if not THE favorite! Man, this album is fire.
btw, easiest way to feel badass ever - play anything off this album on guitar, preferably Rattlesnake (or, y'know, Bulls on Parade). Try not to punch anything while doing so, that might be hard!
I feel like I enjoyed Sour Soul more than anyone else. Sure, it could've been better, but I think overall it was very enjoyable. That track with Doom is straight fire
Fuck yeah! Sounds great
Also hoping that this year we'll finally hear something by Giraffe Tongue Orchestra (Brent Hinds of Mastodon, Ben Weinman from Dillinger Escape Plan, Thomas Pridgen from Mars Volta and a shit ton of other musicians including Juliette Lewis!)
Guys that new Woods album is SO FUCKING GOOD. I totally didn't expect this. I never gave them a chance before because I vaguely remembered not liking some songs by them like 4 years ago so I kinda skipped on anything they released afterwards, but I did give this a chance and I don't regret it a single bit. I also visited some of their past albums and boy do I feel stupid for missing out. What a marvelous album, I can't wait to get it on vinyl (possibly this upcoming Record Store Day!) and grind the shit out of it into my personal AOTY list.
Dead Sea Scrolls is soooo good! I only listened to the Yeasayer album front to back once but that track immediately stood out. I will def listen to it again because I liked it pretty much, even if I'm not a big fan of these interlude-ish things (I hated it when it was called "skits" as well y'all!).
The new TLSP is definitely a great one, I liked it a lot. Can't wait to see them live in two months, feel like it's going to be a great show!
Groovy Tony is soooo good. New Q and Kendrick albums in the same year is what the world needs.
Listening right now to the Deakin song which I somehow missed, I like it a lot! Great melodies there
I was very lucky to catch Luna on one of their reunion shows last year! I really didn't know too much of the band but I went anyway and I'm so glad I did because the show was simply amazing. They played and sounded so good and I really felt dumb for not checking them out before. What I'm trying to say is, go listen to Luna now! Beautiful, beautiful stuff.
OK it's definitely not what I hoped it would be, really kind of underwhelming. Hopefully Ye was hinting at possible new Watch the Throne album though! ("Throne is back up in it, aye")
Although I find it VERY hard to believe I will like this more than the new Deftones album. Re-listened to all 3 singles today and they're all straight FIRE. Can't wait to listen to Gore! (best cover art of the year too, calling it now)
I never gave Parquet Courts a proper chance because I didn't really like whatever song or two I heard by them a couple years ago, but this write-up certainly makes me want to check out Human Performance now. Great writing, Tom.
