Talk about disappointment (and a shameless foray into the first page), what was the most disappointing album of the year?
My vote for either that pointless Refused album (which at least gave as the very great Elektra) or Faith No More (which wasn't really that bad at all, just very bland, which is disappointing from such a ferocious live band)
1. I finally listened to that White Reaper album just because you and bloc kept talking about it. It was great. My favorite is I Don't Think She Cares (That opening keyboard OH MY GOD).
2. That Metz album was one of my biggest disappointments this year. It's got nothing on their furious debut.
I'm sad to say that I agree with you 100%. This list really bummed me, and I just know Pitchfork's will also be annoying but not as much as this one.
At least it's not as bad as Spin electing What Do You Mean? song of the year
I tried to read this at work but really couldn't and decided to comment when I get home. And now this really sucks because this comment is going on page 7 :(
Anyway, I hate how all of you guys already have your year end lists ready. I didn't even finish listening to all the albums I've wanted to this year. So instead of posting a top ten list I'll just mention a few stuff that either everyone here forgot about / didn't pay attention to but was hot shit:
Thee Oh Sees - barely seen any mentions of it, but their new album is a BEAST. Kind of made me regret seeing them live after the kinda-bland Drop came out and not after this album (not really though, they were amazing live).
Will Butler - Seriously, this might be more of an EP than an album but it's one of this year's best releases. It's short enough to make you listen to it again immediately, and most of the 28 minutes here are killer.
Baio - I don't think I saw this mentioned here at all! This album is very good though and you should check it out if you haven't by now.
Everything Everything - as always they get almost no press in the US. But their new album is every bit as solid as their previous (which was one of 2013's best!).
Wavves - I guess it's only me, but I thought V was great. It's really fun, not as good as King of the Beach but much better than Afraid of Heights in my opinion
Last but not least, where the hell are Mac Demarco, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, and Panda Bear? All three are top 20 (if not 10!) for sure.
By the way, Billy Rymer (who is the very good drummer for The Dillinger Escape Plan) just posted on his Facebook that he's on the record, which is more great news
Seriously, it's not THAT weird. My teenage Ed-Sheeran-loving sister just came into my room as I was listening to this and after a few seconds she was humming along (seriously). AnCo have way weirder songs
I'll just say it - I honestly find Scream one of the lesser songs on Art Angels if not the worst. And I don't really mean that in a "they're all good but" kind of way, it's honestly not good IMO.
On the other hand most of the rest of this album is really fucking good, which surprised me because I really wanted to hate it for reasons not yet clear to me. Venus Fly and Kill V Maim are two of the best tracks off of it so really cool she played them live!
This seems like a pretty weak lineup to me. Oh well, I'm only waiting for Primavera's lineup anyway. It's both consistently amazing and the only one I could actually afford to go to
I don't necessarily disagree with you, but so what? This site reported favorably about Father John Misty's random jumbles multiple times (Mr. Tillman, if you happen to come by here again and read this, just wanted to say that I love you and never change).
Butler at least gets his point across, he does use some weird offbeat expressions to do so but he didn't write anything particularly baffling, which is why this reeks to me as more of a defense of Grimes than anything else
Wait, your compaint is that his review is concerned mostly with his own opinions of pop music (and, um, the bible) and not with the actual album reviewd? Why, but I thought that this was the Pitchfork-patented Record Reviewing Stylebook.
Look, unfortunately this type of music journalism is very common these days, including this publication (no shade). It honestly sounds to me like your main issue with this review is that Butler doesn't seem to like the critic-revered album/artist that much, which is often the case on this site where you come across these bitter write ups. Look, I don't think that it's a good review, but to me this just feels like an uncalled attack on grounds of different tastes, which is always dumb.
I remember that song, it was terrible. But at least it had a good chorus and the final verse was alright. I'll admit that I like Thank God's chorus (which is stuck in my head as of this moment), but it barely redeems the shitshow that is the rest of this song.
I have heard songs by Weezer that I absolutely loved and others I despised, but this is the first one I just don't get. What the fuck is going on in this song? And that video?
I'm really confused
