This looks like as good a place as any to mention I'm going to see Kanye live for the first time a month from now which is unbelievable to me. I'm so incredibly excited. The odds of it sucking are very high (terrible venue, separated areas with different ticket prices, etc.) but I'm still stoked. Anyone wants to tell me about their Kanye concert experience?
Death Magic is pretty tight. I don't like it as much as Get Color, but it's really good and the opening sequence is incredible. I didn't like Life at all, but maybe it'll take a few listens more.
Also, I was lucky to catch HEALTH in Berlin a few years ago. They were amazing live! Wish I could see them again.
Another One, on the other hand, is near-perfect IMO. Iv'e been listening to it for a while but it just keeps getting better. Easily some of his best songs, most of these blow Salad Days out of the water. I'm also very fond of Mac now, after seeing him live in June. Easily one of the best live shows I've ever had the pleasure of watching.
So, a good week all around then. Let's hope Dre delivers!
I never get the hate for Turn Blue. I honestly thought it was and still is a great record. Weight of Love is a perfect psych blues jam.
Anyhow. I loved El Camino when it came out and listened to it a lot, but I'll have to admit that I've barely listened to it at all since. I don't know why this happened, it didn't get such a big exposure here as it did in the States, but I kinda grew tired of it.
I think Brothers is my favorite then. No bad songs and many great ones, Next Girl is such a total jam.
Guess I'll try Rubber Factory next :) thanks for the write up!
Sure!
When asked about what he thinks about Is This It in retrospect: "I think it was a cool first album, but not very advanced musically. You can't compare it to, say, Miles Davis. I'm not bummed about it, but I feel what I'm doing today shows progress for me."
On working with Daft Punk: "Their attention to detail is similar to mine. They probably said, 'God, they thought we were crazy, but this guy is so much more.' It was fun working with them. When you work with people whose only target is to create something good, and they don't care about ego, when I find these people - our collaboration takes off."
On the last couple Strokes album: "The problem was that on [Angles & Comedown Machine] I didn't fight. Not because I lowered my standards, but because I didn't want to fight. If someone wanted one thing and I wanted another, I went with his request. [...] Now, if we make another album everyone wants their voice to be heard, and that means I'll have to settle again."
when the journalist says Arctic Monkeys were influenced by the Strokes: "I think they took some of the stuff we did and improved on it. They helped me a lot, because when they came out I was trying to find ways to improve and they pushed me forward."
Wish I could translate it all really, but I think those are the best quotes
I should also mention I'm going to the Strokes' Hyde Park concert in two weeks and I'm really excited. Heard very good stuff about their Primavera performance. If it does turn out to be one of their last shows, at least I get to see them before they're done
Today an Israeli magazine published an interview with Julian Casablancas (He + the Voidz are performing here next week), and when asked about the option of another Strokes album he said that "All signs show that there's going to be one", and he also said there's will be another Voidz album and maybe it'll be "more accessible", so let's keep our hopes up!
I don't think you can find the interview online anywhere, but it's also in Hebrew so it's not gonna help much. It's a great one though, he also provided some comments on his opinion of "Is This It ", working with Daft Punk, and the problem with the last 2 Strokes albums. (And also about #brunchgate).
Everything about this is amazing, from the cover to the new logo to this fucking jam of a song. I don't really like double albums but this is the most I've been excited for one since David Comes to Life!
That was Kid A. They didn't print it in future issues of the CD, so when I got mine secondhand a couple of years ago I was very excited to actually find the hidden booklet
I hate to say this, but I find both singles to be really underwhelming, which sucks because I was really excited about a new Blur album.
Hopefully these will work better in the context of an album or are just lazy single choices. I want to believe.
Thoughts on Will Butler's Policy, everyone?
I absolutely love it! It's so short and quick and catchy and fun as hell. I've been jamming it like crazy all week, I love how because it's so short I immediately have to replay the whole thing.
It's really hard to pick a favorite because all 8 are so great, but Anna and Son of God come to mind. Also, that guitar breakdown/solo on What I Want is the greatest.
I don't know how to pick just one song. It always changes. Every other month I fall in love with a Radiohead song I realized I haven't gave enough attention to and repeat the shit out if it.
If I reaaaaaaly have to choose.. It's going to be Weird Fishes. I get goosebumps only thinking about it. This is honestly one of the most perfect songs I've ever had the pleasure of listening to.
The Bends is probably one of my all time favorite albums, and it's not even my favorite Radiohead album. What I love about it so much is that it's perfect for every mood I'm in, I can always put it on and be sure I'm going to have an amazing time. It's a beautiful, perfectly sequenced, masterfully played piece of music and I'm so glad that it exists.
"If you’re already sick of hearing about Carly Rae Jepsen’s new single..."
It probably tells more about me than anything else, but I swear that Stereogum is the ONLY place I've read about/heard this song
It just wasn't as good as their two previous albums, or even close to Ty Segall's massive Manipulator which at least for me was it's main competitor for hyped garage AOTY.
"Web", however is a beast. So I'm very excited for this
I'm probably going to be downvoted to hell, but I find it very odd how any of the comments here could be applied to Death Grips, but their reception here is the exact opposite.
"...just want attention", "their act is so lame", etc.
As someone who doesn't like either band's music and/or aesthetic, I honestly wonder why they are being treated so differently. Both are extremely gimmicky hip-hop acts with music that really isn't any good, but a lot of hype from the press... so what gives?
