Just since this dominated discussion on the other thread as well:
I can't believe anyone actually cares about the name, but it's a joke about and a play on super-dramatic hardcore band names and is totally tongue-in-cheek. It also, coincidentally, was probably a genius move because it helped them get a ton of attention when they were first starting out and now it seems that they're kind of stuck with it.
But also! Band names don't matter (unless they're flat-out offensive) and I don't get why it would seriously bother anyone :)
No real reason -- it just doesn't grab me, I guess. To build off your comparisons, I've heard all of this done before, and better. Was hoping the lyrics would make up for the blah production side of it, but that didn't really happen.
The best Empress Of track IMO is still "Realize You."
The first time I heard it, I literally laughed out loud when she started crying. Now it just makes me really sad :(
This whole verse is like stupidly genius:
"On Saturday night, we all went out to eat
But I can never decide, so someone chose sushi
I got soup, and I ordered rice
But watching my friends eat my friends, ruined my appetite"
(I really like this whole album.)
Oh really? Didn't know that.
I know it's happened in the past -- usually people who preordered it will just notice it pop up in their iTunes one day. I can't remember specific albums that's happened with, but I know it's a thing. As far as I know, nothing's ever come of it... I guess because people still pay for it? Still a shitty thing to have happen. You'd think Apple would have a working system in place by now after a decade-plus in the music store game.
It (annoyingly) varies from site to site, but we typically have them in the order you should read them -- so from the first tweet sent to the last, to save you any unnecessary scrolling.
Only exception I can think of would be is if someone deleted their tweets and it was an actual screenshot instead of an embed -- then it could go either way, depending on who took the screenshot originally.
Easiest way to keep track is to look at the timestamp under each one! :)
Hmm, I definitely could see how the "childlike" stuff could rub someone the wrong way, though I think the LIZ video is the only one that probably takes it a bit overboard. I don't really see it through that lens -- if anything, that aspect is a result of being very influenced by Japanese culture, where that kind of stuff runs rampant -- but if that's a sticking point for you, I totally get it.
Ha, at least you gave it the time! I love pretty much everything PC Music has done -- and GFOTY is my favorite -- but I totally get why people wouldn't like it. It's definitely not for everyone.
I mean, yeah, Billboard is often ridiculous (especially in the past few years with all the rule changes), but IDK if fucking Metric -- who I like very much and are probably one of my fav bands -- are punk or alternative enough to be calling out the Hot 100 for being too poppy. They're not exactly anti-establishment...
Yeah, it's totally going to commercially tank, especially because everyone has it already and no one will buy it. But critically it will definitely do very well (obviously lol).
I wonder if she'll get dropped from her label after this, or if they're just going to switch lanes for the next record and try to sell her as a critical darling. Should be interesting to see!
I've only listened to that album once through (and can't pause to listen to it again cus we're jamming to CRJ in the office) but I don't remember the production being particularly memorable either way, which means that it was probably just fine for the kind of album it is. (Which is a good one! There's just so much ish to listen to I haven't come back to it.)
See, I'd say "Making" is one of the least well-produced songs on the album. Some parts of it just fall flat for me. Granted, I still think it's a great song. It's like comparing gold to gold that like...has a smudge on it.
Best produced songs on the album IMO are "When I Needed You," "Run Away With Me," "Warm Blood," and "Your Type." And "I Really Like You," but that's also because the people that worked on that are master-class.
I agree -- this is def one of my least favorites, but I have to be impressed with the fact that she fucking used the word "hijack" in a chorus and pulled it off.
More importantly... Your numbers there tell me that you don't have the deluxe edition of the album! Get on that!! Some of the best songs are there -- "I Didn't Just Come Here," "Black Heart," and "Favourite Colour" are all essential.
Well, strictly in regards to Taylor, she was never really country to begin with. Maybe an argument can be made for her self-titled, but from Fearless on it was pretty apparent she was in the pop lane.
The whole "my first pop album hehe" was the least genuine aspect of the whole 1989 rollout, tbh.
I agree with all of your points! Just don't think there's as big of a divide between the two as all those signs suggest. Robyn really only has two true classics (IMO) under her belt -- Robyn and Body Talk -- while, right now, CRJ has one. Yeah, Robyn has a lot more charisma and natural talent, but there are songs on Emotion that measure up to the best of Robyn, and they're not even singles: "When I Needed You," "I Didn't Just Come Here To Dance," "Boy Problems," "Your Type..."
But, yeah, CRJ is definitely still unproven -- let's give her another album cycle to catch up, then we can reevaluate!
Oop, that was from an earlier draft before the video was actually up. (It took forever to be uploaded.) I just used that as a placeholder figuring he would do something weird because he usually does! Fixed to something more ~appropriate~
