"The C In Cake" is the name of a song by Gastr Del Sol, who were pals with the Sea And Cake crew, who iirc appropriated and homophonized the song's title for their band's name.

Wait he's released AT LEAST two different versions of "Rock 'N' Roll Singer" before. And it's not even one of his best AC/DC covers! (It's pretty far down the list of his best covers overall.)

Man don't use THIS comments section to rehabilitate Anselmo's stock. Vinnie Paul hadn't talked to that racist fuck in 15 years.
"Former PANTERA drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott, who hasn't spoken to Anselmo since the band's split in 2003, was dismissive when asked for a comment on the singer's white-power salute. "I can't speak for him," Vinnie said in a 2016 interview. "He's done a lot of things that tarnish the image of what PANTERA was back then and what it stood for and what it was all about. And it's sad."

MBV are one of my favorite bands of all time. I saw them once, at Roseland in '08, and I was maybe 20 heads deep into the crowd. The motherfucking sound-blast coming off their amps was so loud that it was hitting the crowd like a strong wind. I literally felt it pushing against and INSIDE my body. It was absolutely incredible and incomparable, altho I guess this kinda illustrates the sensation:

Kreator? I mean, they're late-middle-aged vegan idealist-socialist anti-establishment agitproppers who live in Germany and have spent the last three decades futilely railing out against ever-growing injustice, and they also play thrash metal for a living even as they approach what should be retirement age. How could they be anything other than "grumps"? (I love them more than my own family, naturally.)
It occurs to me now that it should have been "Tayblemates" and "Kroeteges" (instead of "Kroteges") so having acknowledged my error, I accept this penalty.
I'm not sure if this is urban legend or historical fact, but I read somewhere that at one point in the eight-year gap between Daisy and Science Fiction, somebody uploaded some Republic Of Wolves songs to Soundcloud or YouTube, claimed they were "leaked tracks" from the forever-in-progress fifth Brand New album, and BN fans flipped the fuck out (the absolute right reaction, even if for the wrong reason).
Love you, Mike. Did you stay up for all 13 innings? If so, I envy you! Musta been ABSOLUTELY MINDFUCKINGLY UNBELIEVABLE to watch Judge and Giancarlo blast those bombs into the dark night sky after 12 fraught innings of zeroes after zeroes after zeroes. They are truly gods among men. I for one appreciate the Blue Jays, their fans, and the city of Toronto for providing these stars such a perfect supporting cast and scenery against which to shine. As the say in the theatre: There are no small parts!
I deliberately (and very carefully) steered clear of any and all BN references in the Republic Of Wolves writeup because I didn't know how people would react, and I wanted readers to engage with the music free of any uncomfortable (and unrelated) associations. But yeah, if you like THE MUSIC of Brand New, you will dig real hard on Republic Of Wolves. In many ways, I think Shrine is top-to-bottom superior to any individual Brand New album, fwiw, although that's partly because I think every Brand New album is a little bloated and repetitive in its own way, and Shrine is comparatively tight and varied. In any case, I'm glad you noted the similarities, because maybe some people will read what you wrote (as opposed to what I wrote) and check out the album as a result. It's really fucking spectacular.
Speaking of "spectacular":
I had Svalbard on my personal ballot, separated from ATG by 3 points and I could easily make the case for flipping 'em or awarding them the same number of points or whatever. Love them both, and I think both bands would be stoked as fuck to be mentioned in the same breath as the other.
The Armed was pretty high on my ballot, but it woulda been way higher if it weren't for Rolo. That thing just obliterated my entire grading curve and basically left everything else in its shadow. That said, I think those two albums are by some margin the two most exciting, defiant, groundbreaking things I've heard this year. The Voidz record actually does something similar, although with a pop/rock/indie pallette instead of hardcore/metal/shoegaze. But Rolo isn't just breaking a bunch of rules, it's re-writing them. I have no reservations calling it a masterpiece.
Phil Freeman is a multitude-containing motherfucker https://www.stereogum.com/1972157/reload-turns-20/franchises/the-anniversary/
Also: Gonna assume you're not talking about "Symbol Album" ('91) here, but dude Emancipation has some jams!
Also, this seems like an apt moment to revisit my April 2017 plea to then-rookie Aaron Judge that he walk-up to "Bringin' It Down" by New York hardcore crushers JUDGE. Missed opportunity! It's OK tho, I still love the guy.
I considered that instead of Magus for my "most-anticipated" of the three new ones, but I remembered being kinda let down by their cover of Soundgarden's "Fourth Of July" (my favorite Soundgarden song, no contest, and a GREAT choice for a Thou cover) so I hedged and went with Magus just to be safe. But when I read that Rhea Sylvia description my eyes kinda popped outta my head bc I fucking love AIC:

I agree 100% with everything yr saying and tbh I'm mostly just glad you shared this version for people to check out! It is a truly rad cover and your description nails WHY it is so rad.
That's the version I was talking about in the "Rosanna" comments last week!

It is really good and I fucking love the way they do the harsh-clean chorus harmonies but the Weezer cover is better, if considerably less inventive.
"Improbably good" is exactly right. "Africa" is in my top 10 all-time favorite songs, and there are plenty of days it's my very favorite song period. I love Weezer a lot, too. So I was DESPERATELY hoping Weezer would NOT do this, because I was pretty sure it would leave me in a murderous rage. Instead? It is fucking MAGICAL.
Also: It sounds way better on Spotify than YouTube to me (I've now listened numerous times on both). The harmonies are clearer and the guitars kick in harder. I gotta get a high-quality MP3 of this one. I fucking love it.
I saw him twice! He played "Eternal Life" so fucking heavy live that it sounded like Slayer. Until editing this piece, I didn't know he auditioned for Agnostic Front, but it absolutely makes sense. He totally could have (and would have, I bet) made some seriously gnarly records if he'd stuck around.
There's not much video of his old full-band live sets, and this one doesn't convey how truly loud and unhinged he played the song when I saw him, but it's the best I could find. RIP.
I saw this on Reddit yesterday and contemplated posting it but couldn't justify it. Seems like a good place to share now. "Africa" is one of my favorite songs of all time, and I genuinely enjoyed this.
Yeah it's super drone-y so far. I gotta give it a solid listen away from my desk, but your take sounds pretty on-point based on what I'm hearing. Thanks man!
Oh man if you've never heard Live The Storm you are in for a fucking treat dude. Cue up that one now and then check TDFTNI when it comes out in three weeks. Tompa sings on both, and his voice (esp. his latter-day vox) is my favorite sound in the world. Enjoy!
Nice! But I think I phrased that poorly: I was saying that Disfear's Live The Storm has Uffe on guitar. TDFNTI has Martin Larsson and Jonas Stalhammar (God Macabre, The Crown) on guitar. (Original ATG guitarist Anders Bjorler is no longer in the band, which might explain the heavier sound.) These guys are all in so many bands together that it's kinda hard to keep track of the DNA.
To be clear: You should start with either Live The Storm or TDFTNI, because TDFTNI sounds as much (if not more) like Live The Storm than it does any actual At The Gates records, and both sound more like Entombed than At The Gates ever did before. It occurs to me that these sentences may not be entirely coherent? In any case, my apologies. Let me know what you think of the music, whatever you wind up checking out!
Tbh, based on your preferences, I'd say to start with the new one because it gets closer to that old Entombed sound than anything else in ATG's catalog (which is one of the reasons I think it's their best album). Terminal Spirit Disease and Slaughter Of The Soul are both stone classics but sound kinda tinny and light in comparison. Also, TDFTNI kinda feels like a perfect distillation of their entire body of work plus Disfear's Live The Storm (which would be my alternate "entry point" suggestion, because that's as much of an antecedent to TDFTNI as any proper ATG record AND it has Entombed founder Uffe Cederlund on guitar).
I mean, it's not a fair comparison, because SOTS is an icon of a different era. But I play them back-to-back and I can't actually pinpoint one way SOTS is the superior work, whereas I can offer half a dozen solid arguments in favor of TDFTNI. I don't think history will rank them in that order (nor should it) and I don't think fans in the pit will lose their minds for the new songs the way they do for "Blinded By Fear" or "Cold" (understandably), but if both albums came out TODAY, I think TDFTNI would hands down be regarded as "the one." Of course I love them all and I fully expect most people to say, like, "It's pretty good but ATG peaked with Terminal Spirit Disease," and in ways I agree with that too! But I can't really see anybody saying this isn't on par, because it is objectively INSANELY fucking good.
Yeah it occurred to me last night that I was possibly conflating Apple Music on-demand streams with Beats 1 spins. Thx for the fact-check! Again, I agree with you: It's an awful, almost punitive system. (And yet it's exponentially better than YouTube in every capacity.)
