Great write up Tom. Mac's transformation from being pretty much universally hated outside of high schools and frat houses to being, like you said, the epicenter of that emerging California stoner-rap community, is pretty damn fascinating.
Barrow is probably in the right but he's just kind of coming across as bitter and salty with this considering no one above the age of 16 really gives a shit about The Weeknd anymore.
There is still good EDM music, and some of the douche scene actually does enjoy some good EDM, but a lot of what is most popular in the EDM scene is pretty uninspired stuff that only sounds good if you're on Molly.
I'll probably get downvoted for this, but no mention of Asher Roth's album that was released yesterday as well at the bottom? He's come a long way since "I Love College".
You should check out Bishop Nehru if you haven't. He did a similar kind of thing with his mixtape Nehruvia, and is also really young like Joey. And he has a collaboration with DOOM supposedly coming out this year.
He says in the beginning of the song that its from LT3 aka Longterm 3. Supposedly he's supposed to have a mixtape and an album out this year so who knows which one this will be on.
Look the Happy video is really cool, but let's not act like its some kind of beacon of incredible originality. It's not that hard to think of doing something like that, just like it probably wasn't that hard to think of doing that Girl Talk video. I highly doubt Pharrell and his team stole the idea.
SoMo is from Denton, Texas where I go to college. I was in a school organization that actually had him come perform for an event of ours back in 2011. He did it for free and he was just playing covers of pop and R&B songs. Crazy to hear him on the radio and see him performing on TV now.
And I have to say with that Sigma video, its weird seeing British girls wearing dream catchers and other Native American inspired stuff. Its weird cultural appropriation when we do it in America but I feel like its really weird when British people or other Europeans do it.
I feel like if you go see an 88 year old man play music, you shouldn't go in expecting a particularly tight set.
And I'm sure this was a really awful performance, but if you hate it, just go. Don't boo a living legend. Do you really want to look back at the end of your life and say "One time, I boo'd BB King because he wasted about 30 minutes of my time."
For what it is, Loiter Squad is a funny show. Yeah yeah, if it wasn't done by Odd Future it wouldn't be on TV, but a lot of the people is that it IS Odd Future and those dudes just happen to be pretty funny.
Also Joe Budden sucks.
