there's few things that get me going like a well-constructed themed playlist. I will throw it on tomorrow while recovering my from bourbon-induced hangover. Have a lovely weekend, all!
oh yeah, for sure! I'm referring more to who we have to accept as popular rappers (and moreover, public figures) more than who we choose to listen to. obviously I'd rather someone like, say, Saba be the most popular man in rap, but unfortunately this is not something we can control.
I agree on all fronts, I just think that the more subdued feel of Closed on Sundays made me really focus on the lyrics, which...was not a good thing, to say the least. I've heard more subtlety from the psycho preacher at my alma mater that spent his Wednesdays standing outside one of the buildings on campus telling us that having sex in college would eternally damn us.
it's the only correct way to listen to Yeezus
at the end of the day, I will take a Trump-supporting, out-of-touch asshole over what many other of the recent popular rappers are doing (6ix9ine promoting gang activities and committing sex crimes with 13 year olds, XXX committing and bragging about hate crimes, any one of the many crimes on NBA YoungBoy's rap sheet, etc., etc.). I don't endorse anything he says, and I of course acknowledge that words can be as damaging as actions in certain circumstances, but I'm not going to stop listening to him on those merits alone in the same way I felt obliged to remove Ignition from my playlists. I would never want to talk to the dude, but I'm still willing to at least give his music a shot.
*sets Spotify to 2x playback speed and takes an adderall* I'll get to the takes first if it kills me!!
yeah, I don't disagree. even the tracks I named there probably aren't going to make my playlist, except for Follow God. still, I've done much worse with 27 minutes of my life before.
he revealed himself again just as I always knew he would: in the Stereogum comment section
hahaha, check my post at the bottom for the best tracks if you're interested. also, who is downvoting that last comment? that's like the least controversial thing I could have possibly said in this thread.
Follow God, Everything We Need, God Is and Use This Gospel are excellent tracks. It's not earth-shattering but it's good to great, first listen. if you just ignore Kanye as a person (a strategy I cannot recommend enough) the music is still more than worth your time, particularly given it's only 27 minutes. and for the Kanye haters, I will give you this: Closed on Sunday fucking suuuuuuucks.
I started listening at 12 and I'm only halfway through - let's at least wait for the takes until we're done, people.
came here to comment nearly the same thing - big time God Loves Ugly vibes on this tape, particularly Bless the Fire.
I admire your optimism on that last note, but I wouldn't count on it! the music, on the other hand, is something worth being optimistic over.

I absolutely loathe the first two albums but came all the way back around on ABIIOR (though I will admit the terribly titled sophomore effort has some excellent tracks, namely The Sound, Paris, UGH! and She's American). If ABIIOR doesn't/didn't do it for you, I think they're probably just not for you, which is also a position I more than understand.

don't worry bloc, I'd be remiss if things got too harmonious around here! time has not yet passed you by.
watching the comment sections on 1975 articles gradually shift from bemusement and eye-rolls to genuine acceptance that this band is doing lovely, incredible stuff has been a real joy for me.
speaking from my official position as a Fashion Guyâ„¢, I absolutely think less of people that wear Vetements, just as I did with Off-White. nearly nothing about either brand is pushing the envelope or redefining old classics - Virgil puts quotation marks around everything to seem deep and Vetements charged $840 for a standard long-sleeve polo with the DHL logo on it. luckily for both brands, many fashion-focused people have a 1,000,000 to 1 ratio of dollars to brain cells.
"she tries on adversity like a pair of vetements socks" is a fuckin BAR, and wildly accurate
Bark Your Head Off, Dog is top five for me, unquestionably, but I certainly understand the Painted Shut slant as well. Really interested to see where they land on this site's best of the decade list.
Gallant's Sweet Insomnia also releases this week - highly recommended for any fans of early aughts R&B. dude's voice is unbelievable, I've damn near injured myself trying to reach his high notes when I sing along in the car!
mainline any and all Frances Quinlan content directly into my veins
almost nothing I love more on here than a good cross-article bit
I look forward to the dystopian near-future when 90% of all Stereogum articles are solely about musicians suing each other
I didn't deny anything, I know when I'm being snippy! obviously no ill will towards anyone here though, I just enjoy debate from time to time - sometimes the harmony can get monotonous, y'know? I guess it's the philosophy major in me. seriously though, my apologies for the needlessly snide remarks. alcohol is a hell of a drug. everyone check out the clipping. and Caroline Polachek albums if you haven't, they're both excellent! ta-ta for now!
I wasn't up in arms at all, until his needlessly snippy retort. if that last statement reads as anything other than a joke than I don't know what to tell you guys. I'm not here to argue, by any means!
a top three album of one genre can still be a top three album of the decade, no? also, I was also referring to the reader's poll, and you were still wrong - my proof is right there in the post. finally, if you don't know what the phrase "put the pitchfork down" means (which you clearly don't based off of your post) then I can no longer help you. have a lovely weekend!
this is DECISIVELY LESS EXCELLENT news
I've heard a lot of conflicting takes on this but I really hope it is excellent, as someone who has had a longstanding love for the original. I won't be able to watch it this week so catch me in another thread and let me know what you think!
Daveed is an actor, yes - he was one of the original Hamilton actors and is also on (was on? I don't keep up with TV) Black-ish. The group's whole shtick is deeply conceptual deconstructed rap music - intense is probably the best one-word description for it. definitely check out Splendor & Misery if you like this, I would argue it's just a little better than this one.
the sound design during Run For Your Life when the cars are driving by playing the beats he's rapping to is so unbelievably genius, and that's just one of three or four moments on that one song that blew me away. I didn't know that William Hutson had a doctorate in experimental music until I read the AOTW article, and after listening to this album of theirs in particular that completely checks out. I've listened three times already and I still feel I have a lot to dig into. I hope this album sees them get a little more widespread acclaim.
oh man, thank you for informing me! this will be my early Saturday morning soundtrack for sure.
just checking in to say that on Halloween night I am canceling any and all plans, turning all the lights off in my house, lighting one (1) candle, and playing There Existed An Addiction To Blood front to back two or three times. what a fucking album, man - Daveed Diggs is a genius. hope everyone has a lovely weekend lined up!
hell yeah man, congratulations! not many better places to make that move, in my opinion.
good to see Danny's transition into "cool uncle that tells a few incredible stories and then complains about how tired he is and how he has to go home" is still going swimmingly
crazy Wiki is only just about to turn 26, given that his work with Ratking seems like it was several lifetimes ago - think he's primed for a good few years to start the next decade.
can't help but laugh at the fact I got a TikTok ad before the meme you posted and automatically clicked on it thinking it was the meme in question. you win this time, TikTok.
