I feel what you're getting at, mayo. And I'm not suggesting we ignore concerns and grievances. But I still think there is such a thing as "too sensitive." Perhaps this particular instance isn't necessarily one of them (I like what doc brownout said about the Purple Heart up there), but I was just using it to make a point. I see plenty of overly sensitive stances in varying circumstances that completely stifle rational expression all the time. I think sometimes we just need to chill a bit. Not everything needs to crucified for it's potential to offend someone somewhere.
Anyway, just thinking outloud. Or online, as it were.
I'm sorry but I have to play devil's advocate here for a second, because I think it's all ridiculous and the reactions are a bit overkill. People are just too damned sensitive these days. There's lots of cultural imagery we assimilate every day. Specific to Native American culture, every hipster douchebag in the world walks around with the same faux-tribal patterns all over their H&M clothes these days. Many of those people are probably the same ones mocking this photoshoot to no end.
Unfortunately, it did upset a few people (probably white) and for that he apologized, which is good on him. I actually like what Mr. Mayo said up top... Elle had to figure this would draw some controversy, and were probably banking on it. But even still, give me a break people. The PC police drive me crazy sometimes. We're all going to be wearing the same dictated uniforms one day just to keep from offending SOMEBODY.
Also, for the record, I never did read that whole thread until just now. There is a bit more to it than shows up in Shut Up Dude... But still.
Down vote all you want...I guess?
I can't possibly be the only one that thinks it's rather backwards that crania americana's bull shit about "addiction is a disease" gets the up votes and michael_'s response to it would have all the down? I'm all for celebrating PSH as a talented man taken before his time, but that doesn't hide the fact that he fell to his own vices. Michael_ is absolutely right in his response. And his Deafheaven Valentine
A good year, peops! I haven't been able to interact this last couple months, but this was the first full year of regular posting and commenting I had. Good times, good friends, good tunes.
Das' it and das' all, yawl.

Mikey Nel, While it's no secret Kanye is not my favorite artist in the world, I'm with you on Black Skinhead. That was the one track on that album that is truly legit front to back.
(Raptor, you seein' this^? Just making sure...)
I'll have to post mine when it gets "unveiled." My top two are m b v and RAM. I don't know where RAM sits on your personal list, RJ, but I do recall you and I both simultaneously falling hard for that one as well.
Ah man. I'm not surprised, but I am slightly disappointed that the two most blatantly overrated albums of the year (by my money) sit at the top. I won't complain too much about it though, because I think over the course of this year I've complained plenty about both. Oh well.
Otherwise, I'm very pleased with this list. Best I've seen so far amongst the few publications that have released their own. Very happy to see Sky so high and National a little lower. Should I be surprised that there is no K-pop to be seen?
I'm sad I haven't had the chance to interact on these boards as much over the last month or so, but thanks for the awesome year in covering these various goods, Gum. And thanks for giving me ten of the favs midway through : ) You stimulate me.

Same with me actually. New job has internet blocks that mess with the commenting. So since I don't hop on regularly throughout the day like I used to, I tend to forget to chime in by the evening.
13 for me, but I was 14 before I actually heard it. It's no wonder MCIS his harder for that generation when you think about it, especially in the context Ryan so wonderfully displayed in the article.
We are long lost brothers indeed, Luke.
Interesting theory. True or not, my experience fits this suggestion as I prefer MCIS and am probably among the older Gen Y'ers. I didn't get into the band until MCIS hit, and as a result it was my first true intro to them and forever my favorite. (But only by a little.)
Thanks for plugging the request, Luke. And thanks to Stereogum for listening! Specifically, thank you Ryan for putting out one of the best Counting Down pieces I've read on the site. You, sir, are a gentleman and a scholar.
I started a new job recently, and to my dismay have realized commenting on Stereogum is difficult due to the web block's there. This saddens me as most of my Stereogum interaction was done in the afternoons at my old job. I've been itching to get to my computer and comment on this glorious list all day.
Anyway, I don't want to spend too much time debating how I think the catalogs to one of my favorite bands of all time should be ordered. Partly because it would get too long, but mostly because this list is pretty damn good. I'd have MCIS at #1 no question. But it doesn't anger me to see Siamese Dream up top, since both sit firmly in my top ten albums of all time. I love Oceania, much more than the Machina albums, but Ryan's writeup on it and reasoning for a lower ranking make total sense.
What I would like to add is this: This band is one of maybe three or four bands that literally changed my life with their music. A band that soundtracked who I was at the time I heard it, and continues to deliver on nostalgiac bliss all these years since. People can have their Nirvanas, their Pearl Jams, their Pavements and whatever else. That's all fine and dandy. But Smashing Pumpkins was THE band of the 90's in my opinion. Hell, even the 90's output of my favorite band of all time (Radiohead) doesn't compare. That's right... MCIS > OK Computer. Argue with me all you want, but I'll fight to the death behind that statement.
May Billy continue to surprise us henceforth, whether it be as a Pumpkin or otherwise.

I was about to jump down here and declare Glynis as THE track of this comp...looks like I wasn't alone in my sentiments.
I may or may not be alone in this one though: I still think "Iris" and "Slide" kick ass. There. I said it.
Henceforth I shant even downvote Mr. suckhard. He's already earned his unmerited fame by attaining every single spot on the week end worst list. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how fame works in America.
