This is a really great record, the first new music to really grab me since Destroyer and Beach House officially came out a few weeks ago. I do concur that their debut hits with a little more power, but "Beautiful Blue Sky" is a fantastic song even if it's a bit derivative.
Just wanted to pop by and say that this album slays. "Forces from Above," "Times Square" and "Bangkok" are early standouts for me, but the whole thing is cohesive and feels way more direct than any other Destroyer record. Easily top ten of the year for me so far.
Man, I quite like this album. Definitely better than "The Whole Love" for me, or at least that's how I feel right now. And it's a crime to say "Transference" has no obvious highlights when it contains such gems as "Written in Reverse." "Ramshackle" and/or "slapdash" are, to me, lazy words to describe these fascinating, fun albums that were clearly made with a lot of care.
Two listens and it's pretty good. "Let it Happen" is the jam. "The Moment," "The Less I Know the Better" and "Disciples" are all also quite good. It may be futile to throw in with the majority, but I can't get behind "Cause I'm a Man;" it SOUNDS great, and I don't even have a problem with the melodies or the "soft-rock chimes," I just really find the lyrics distasteful and don't buy Kevin Parker's defense of them at all. That said, the drums and synths here sound fantastic. Not really a masterpiece, but a thoroughly enjoyable summer album.
You got it. "LOSE" hasn't come out of my weekly rotation since it came out.
And yeah, sax is the bomb. Can't wait to see how it's used on the new Destroyer, cause "Dream Lover" is the shit.
Gotta throw my hat in the ring for "Coronado" with you. It's a perfectly constructed song and what a great melody the sax plays on the outro. Definitely my highlight on an incredible album.
Super happy to see Beat the Champ on here. Also impressed with the high placement of Simple Songs, that album's incredible. My personal top ten would be something like:
Kendrick Lamar - TPAB
Kamasi Washington - The Epic
Sleater-Kinney - No Cities to Love
Viet Cong - Viet Cong
Mountain Goats - Beat the Champ
Jim O'Rourke - Simple Songs
Father John Misty - I Love You, Honeybear
Sufjan Stevens - Carrie and Lowell
Courtney Barnett - Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Somtimes I Just Sit
Steven Wilson - Hand. Cannot. Erase.
