Give Thursday some time. Insanely underrated. It's certainly not as immediate as House Of Balloons, sure. But it's still a pretty fantastic album and it's sort of unfair that people seem to have written it off so quickly. I get it that HOB came out of nowhere and The Weeknd can't replicate that initial surprise, but that shouldn't detract from some pretty great music.
Yeah, I was just going to use that song as an argument against everyone saying they've gone soft. "Initiation" is super catchy, great beat, and creepy as hell.
Honestly, this is a great album. I do think it's too long...but some of the songs are so strong, I don't mind. There's a solid, reasonable-length album in there.
I wish he would do a full album with The Weeknd. Or with Jamie xx & Rihanna, for that matter.
I agree that he could have trimmed the second half a bit. I feel like the first 8 songs are great, then it gets more spotty. Still really like it, though.
"Massive music machinery" is--in no way--the issue here.
You don't see comment sections with the same reaction to him because his music is generally pretty enjoyable.
Don't make this something it's not.
This is REALLY BAD music. There's plenty of stuff this site covers that I'm not into, but this is pretty silly. I don't see it, at all. Is this a paid promotion? That's the only way this would make sense.
This is not a "country music sucks" or "pop music sucks" or "Wal-Mart-country music sucks" thing. Let me make that clear. This is some silly-ass music.
Oh, eat a dick, Peter.
EAT ONE.
No, I'm not going to that kid's blog, but I'm also not compelled to shit on him for having it and wanting people to read an extremely relevant post he wrote.
Dammit, Peter. Just....come on!
There's a new McDonalds ad that does their thing with "Lisztomania." And some insurance (?) company has a blatant "1901" rip-off. Also, has this column talked about the Chase commercials that use a "Float On" soundalike? ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iAIczVWrSMo&feature=player_embedded )
"Cruel" is easily one of the best songs of the year. I feel like I could write a college essay about how fantastically arranged and paced it is. Good Lord.
But most of Wincing was drastically different than what they'd done before...okay, not drastic, but still. I think Broken Bells allowed him to get the new-wave stuff out of his system and get back to what he does best. Hopefully I'm not speaking too soon. I like the back-to-basics feel, though.
Isn't this like, The Shins 5.0 at this point?
Either way, "Ashes To Ashes" is one of my favorite Bowie songs, so, nice.
And the new song is great. Glad they're keeping it simple.
This and the new M83 song are similar in that they feature a synth riff, but they are on two separate playing fields. M83's track is amazing for how blown out and huge it sounds, this song is fantastic for its laid-back vibe and groove. Also, this song has a much catchier vocal part, while M83's song is mostly a showcase for the gigantic synth riffs. Both are great.
"Swim Good" is even better than "Novacane" for me. And I'm pretty sure Nostalgia/Ultra is getting an official re-release, so I won't be surprised if he blows up. His sophomore album will be the real test, though.
Things like " the love-em-or-hate-em aspect" or being "hypeworthy" are hugely uninteresting to me and shouldn't be considered a musical attribute.
Frank Ocean has great songs.
Anytime someone suggests that people listen to something because it's "trendy," I'm a little bemused.
I like Frank Ocean because he's great, not because "certain circles" have deemed it necessary. I don't think his voice is spectacular, but his melodies, delivery, and lyrics are.
