The concept for the Hives’ new clip is a representative in-studio take, borne of a desire to create something “more realistic than most ‘rock videos.’” So, here’s their performance of their latest single “Go Right Ahead,” recorded in the brand new studio Benny Andersson (ABBA) built in Stockholm. The Hives were his first clients. Watch it below below.
Lex Hives is out 6/5 on Disques Hives and available at iTunes.

Sounds hauntingly like E.L.O. – “Don’t Bring Me Down”. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tl9yP_llY8s
Holy moly, right down to the drum break at 2:54…are they being ironic in their rip-offage? It’s the exact same riff.
Aha! well, that’s a fail.
Though the same thing at first, but apparently they have “full permission” to use the riff… and it is the exact riff from “Don’t Bring Me Down”.
Out of the garage and into the studio — Despite their waning popularity in recent years, I still think they’re a great rock band.
This is ridiculous in its rip-offish-ness of E.L.O., too bad..
The dark figure in the booth must be Randy Fitzsimmons.
His first physical appearance ever! (separate from his hand in Main Offender)
The Hives are still one of the best rock and roll bands of all time. That being said, why did they rip off “Don’t Bring Me Down” by E.L.O.??
‘as a stereogum reader, i found it challenging to hear this track with my head so deeply lodged.’ wow. way to set up a beach blanket and cheese plate in the middle of the pit and pout about being budged the whole show. ELO’s song came out over 30 years ago, the hives said they sampled it. stand down, short bus. that being said, ‘my time is coming’, should have been the first single, possibly the best new rock song of the past five years, hope they do a vid of that one, too. or ‘patrolling days.’ which also cranks.
They’ve asked for permission. “We made the song, and we were really happy with the song. But months later we realised that it sounded a lot like ELO’s ‘Don’t Bring Me Down’, so we contacted Jeff Lynns* and basically gave him a cut off the songwriting. It wasn’t intentional though. Somehow subconsciously that ELO track was probably where it came from.” http://msn.juiceonline.com/the-hives-law-of-the-hives/ *Jeff Lynne. So Lynne is okay with it and The Hives are brilliant live.
The Hives are back! This music video is awesome. Shows the Hives playing as if they were at a concert, instead of overproducing like the pop/hip hop music industry does. This is true rock music.
Glad to see they’re still suitin’ it up!
they are greatest band ever
it´s impossible not to love this band!
Randy F’s looking good!
First off the song, video, and band are brilliant. I did not even hear the similarities to ‘Don’t Bring ME Down’ (Ironically my favorite ELO song) and even after hearing the similarities I was not bothered a bit. Imitation is the highest form of flattery. It just made me feel The Hives were even more brilliant because of their obvious love (maybe subconscious) for one of my favorite bands. All through rock we have seen covers and uses of others music. I mean who will hate on Led Zeppelin for their use of Anne Bredon’s folk song for ‘Babe I’m Gonna Leave You.’ That is what music is, building off of something else. They even gave credit where credit is due
Now that my ridiculous rant is over I want to comment on the amazing simplicity of the video. It is brilliant and very refreshing. Especially loved the camera on Nicholaus Arson’s guitar. I like to feel this is how they record every song. All with Randy Fitzimmons in the background.
and if their popularity is waning it is obviously due to the general populations IQ lowering:)
The song kicks! I love it.
Re-recorded and no ‘mouthing’ so it’s definitely “more realistic than most ‘rock videos”. Loving the concept and how they’re doing almost everything themselves for Lex Hives to make it “as Hives as possible”. This means it will kick ass.
I’ve heard more of their new stuff and it’s all spectacular.
The Hives are one of the BEST live bands today. They put on an unbelievable show, and they are very kind. A friend and I waited outside after a show to meet them, in Dinkytown, Canada. Pelle came out and started apologizing for not coming out sooner, saying he thought no one would care to stick around.
It was really funny to see him transform from his cocky frontman character into a humble Swede.
I also vouch for their kindness. They deserve all their fans.
So for all of you who are mentioning their ELO-ness, check this:

A day late and a internet short – I see it was posted about above – disregard
The Hives are the best. I love that it’s a live recording.
Fucking Amazing!
This song is amazing, and it sounded even better yesterday live!!The Hives rule!
It’s about time they made a new video, finally the great ones are back!!
I spy randy fitzsimmons! great video, it’s simple but that’s just what we’ve been needing: pure raw emotion in conjunction with the music!
“But months later we realised…” HAHAHA
The best Band of the World is back! Can’t wait for June 1st :)
I’ve been a Hives fan from the start, and I still love them just as much. Their music has basically been one of the biggest influences in my life and I truly appreciate what their music has done for me. I have always been a fan of Scandinavian cinematography (the grainy/filtered look is one of my favorites). The video is simple and that’s what I like about it! Less bells and whistles and more rock n’ roll!
What an amazing song & video! Had the chance to hear it live and it’s even better!
Pretty Good! They actually gave credit to ELO for “subconsciously” making it sound similar.
Looking forward the the rest of the record.
LOVE the concept behind this video! The album already has such a down-home approach to it, a DIY video fits perfectly. Randy F is looking stellar.
Love the use of the vocoder at the start of the song. Nice ELO tribute that isn’t on the radio version.
Uh, how do they do it?! Amazing! Roll on Lex Hives!
Great video, great song, can’t wait to hear it live again!
I love this video and this song! The Hives rock!
It’s impossible don’t love this band!!!
Awsome video with a vintage vibe!
Simply amazing, great performance in one take in the studio, something many bands would struggle to do, and struggle even more to publish. The Hives, you are the greatest.
p.s. anyone still shitting on about ELO, suck a dick.
This video is so great!
Love the video and the sneaky glimpse of ‘Randy Fitzsimmons’ in the back :)
Love it.
I love the concept, It’s like to see them practicing the song :) (Plus, I love the fact that they re-recorded the song for this video!)
