I got the new M83 album last month, and I have to say, it’s really disappointing compared to their last record. It’s verging on scary in parts, and nothing new. Shame really. Check out new work from Mellow instead.
Car Chase Terror is genuinely scary but what scared me more to start with was the stadium rock.
After I got passed my very high pretentious ?taste barrier? I realized the addition of live drums and a more rock guitar sound really helped them evolve.
A Guitar and a Heart is the best Neu! song Jim Steinman ever produced ? a comparison reasonable for lots of the album. The slower songs sometimes has the same A.O.R. aesthetic as Phoenix, but obviously with the epic overblown melodramatic My Bloody Valentine with keyboards we are used to from M83. The song I think is called * sounds like it has Lightning Bolt guesting on it. Farewell/Goodbye comes from a strange parallel world in which David Lynch directed Pretty in Pink.
This album is everything I wanted Air?s last album and the last 4 Mercury Rev album?s to be and more, intelligent and prog as hell with no shame.
I have listened to the album so many times now, and it still surprises me and lets me find new elements in it on every listen (like a John Peel show!). I get the feeling i’m still going to be listening to it in years to come. This is not indie anymore, it is now other worldly.
I can throw as many references in as you like but still never define that sound.
M83 produced an experimental album and dared to use clichés others in this genre would not, in turn producing something truly original and always unexpected.
I found this for download (I’ll pick it up whenever I can find it here) and it’s pretty epic. It seems to be overshadowing the end of the year and all the music I just might get for Christmas. I’m not complaining, though. M83 are SO my favourite band I didn’t know about last year at this time.

Washington state Democrats have stolen the Governor’s office!
Thanks King county! We’re glad you’re here to decide the outcome of the election for the rest of the state! Fucking assholes.
