John Denver

The perma-square ’70s folkie John Denver might seem like an odd choice to get the tribute-album treatment. But the man wrote “Leaving On A Jet Plane,” sang with the Muppets, testified against music censorship on the Congressional floor, and danced on the Orioles dugout during the 1983 World Series, so he’s OK with me. And on the forthcoming Denver tribute The Music Is You, people like My Morning Jacket, Kathleen Edwards, and Emmylou Harris take on his songs. Below, listen to Dinosaur Jr. frontman J Mascis and Sharon Van Etten turn Denver’s 1972 rambler “Prisoners” into a bleary, solo-heavy rocker.

The Music Is You is out 4/2 on ATO.
