Beach House - "Wishes" video

Eric Wareheim, one half of the absurdist comedy duo Tim & Eric, doesn’t direct music videos too often, but when he does, he can be relied upon to produce some grandly bizarre vision. That’s certainly the case with his video for Beach House’s majestic Bloom grower “Wishes.” It stars Ray Wise (Leland Palmer from Twin Peaks!), riding a horse and lit by fireworks, singing the song at some sort of futuristic martial arts/gymnastics/cheerleading exhibition in a soccer stadium. The clip feels like a peak into some alternate dimension’s ideas about mass entertainment, but thanks to Wise’s gravity, it comes across as something oddly moving. Watch it below.

Bloom is out now on Sub Pop.

  1. Praise Rang for this blessed video, Hosannah.

  3. Words cannot express how much I love this video. Every once in a while you can see an audience member looking around like “Am I the only one that is confused by this…?”

  4. Watching this video is like one of those dreams that is very emotional and makes total sense while you are experiencing it, and as soon as its done you think back and go…
    “THAT DON’T MAKE NO SENSE!!!”

  5. That’s right folks, Ol Leland’s back on top again. Mairzy doats and and dozy doats and liddle lamzy divey…

  6. Best band makes week’s best music video. Although Phoenix and Deacon are making that a tough call. But…like said before, anything that evokes Twin Peaks nostalgia wins in my book.

  8. “NO FUCKING WAY!”

Were the word out of my mouth when I clicked this link. Considering the following:

–That “Wishes” has been my favorite song off Bloom since its release
–I’ve been a huge fan of Tim & Eric since Tom Goes to the Mayor
–David Lynch is my favorite director so of course I love “Twin Peaks”

I am in no way fit to give an unbiased opinion on this video. I can tell you how I felt watching it: hysterical, loud laughter. Awe-struck stares. Blessed that I can imagine Ray Wise singing my favorite Beach House song forever. Eric’s classic dumbstruck Eric face at 2:35

But to those just writing this off as a big Twin Peaks nod, YOU. ARE. WRONG. Sure, there’s Leland and the white horse, but this is more than that. It’s even more than “just another Eric Wareheim” music video. This is clearly his best work to date. Those outfits the cheerleaders were wearing that made them look like cocoons or something? BEAUTIFUL! The fireworks! YES! WE LOVE FIREWORKS! All the horse heads. Great stuff! Horse head masks are terrific!

Quit looking at this video comparing it to this or that. Just enjoy the fact that Eric Wareheim knows what we like. And GOD BLESS HOSANNAH that Beach House had the infinite sense to pick him to direct the video for their best (read: my favorite) song.

    • Yeah, I was pretty blown away by this, especially since my feelings on Beach House veer from shuffles-like (below) at the worst, to liking a few songs a whole lot.

This video proves Eric’s a visual mastermind. And that cut to the tilt down on the falling, spinning gun was unbelievable/just what the doctor ordered.

    • Your enthusiasm for this video is blowing my mind right now. I’m going to re-watch it yet again with your commentary running through my head in the background.

      • This video is a masterpiece.

        • I like how, according to the times which will soon be invisible, you seem to have re-watched for 1 hour and 46 minutes before finally conceding.

          • Oh, I was out of my head when I wrote that. I thought it was amazing from the first play. Claiming masterpiece was no concession; I wholeheartedly agree. At that moment, I was just really touched by raptor jesus’s rapture.

          • Oh Hey! Came back to watch this video again.

Masterpiece is right. See, this video makes you laugh and cry, but not cry from laughing. Tears come from the sheer high def beauty of all the shots. Laughter comes from the guys with basketball hoops on their crotches filled with like 5 balloons a piece.

Honestly, I never thought Eric could top his video for FlyLo’s “Parisian Goldfish” — now that video I cried from laughter. It was beautiful satire for every typical rap music video lusting over sexy women. Hilarious because the video is them actually fucking. So hilarious that we’d seen so many videos teasing us with sex up until the point Eric just put it all out there.

But this is next level. This is sincere beauty. It shows that Eric’s a fan of the band and even better that he got to work with Beach House with visual ideas. It must be an amazing feeling to see your ideas through the mind of Eric. Man is a true talent, and as far as I’m concerned, one of the greatest music video directors of our time. The man has a body of work. It’s all worth watching.

When the song picks up and the knives fall into their hands? Pure suspension in disbelief.

          • Knives… right, knives…

Sorry, been listening to too much Brick Squad.

    • Yes! THANK YOU Beach House for picking the right song to video up like this.

  9. I loved this video and I don’t even like Beach House. In fact, I watched it twice and that is the only time I’ve heard a Beach House song twice all the way through. Great Job!

  10. Ray Wise shows up in the most random places.

  11. I have a passion for horses. Let’s just leave it at that.

  12. I thought this was weird, then I read it was directed by Eric Wareheim and it all makes sense.
