“Katherine Schell melted the ski slopes of Colorado, rocked out at the South by Southwest festival and serenaded NASCAR and Major League Baseball fans on national television with her rendition of the national anthem.”

The blurb isn’t from a press release, but from eBay, where the songwriter is premiering her new publicity stunt.

In the first auction of its kind, she’s selling the rights to her “hit” (?) song “The Gravity Situation.”

The highest bidder reserves the exclusive right to use “The Gravity Situation” in a commercial format for one year.

About The Song:

“The Gravity Situation,” a versatile contemporary love song, is a combination of poetic prose and philosophical meaning. It has been described by national music critics as a soft, soothing and airy rendition to Van Gogh’s “Starry Night.”

After one day, bidding is up to $305. No ‘Buy It Now’ unfortunately — I wonder what kind of windfall she expects. Kathy has 0 feedback, so caveat emptor. But then again: free shipping!

  1. I can see this being used to sell adult diapers.

  2. VH1 Award-winning !! That’s a goddamn riot.

Yeah, but the opening bid was $300. . . so . . . we’ll see if the bidding shoots up much over $305.

Hey, was that heading a Juliana Hatfield reference? If so you should do a little item on “Some Girls.” They have an album coming out soon, right?

    Do they? I’ll investigate! Thanks.

  6. Actually, it’s not the first auction of it’s kind – I bought a song from Dan the Wank Experience to ‘immortalize my cat Mr. Boo and you can read about it here

Mr. Boo is anxiously waiting for it and has written extensively about it in his blog. I’m betting the kids who are writing it will give Ms. Schell a run for her money :)

Isn’t it against TOS to sell something that doesn’t physically exist?

  8. It’s not against the TOS – there’s actually a whole category for stuff like this on ebay – as for “not physically existing” a recorded song & its rights are much more tangible than say psychic healing (also avaiable on ebay). The Gravity Situation ain’t got nothin’ on Mr.Boo.
