Shapes And Sizes – “Tell Your Mum” (Stereogum Premiere)

Shapes And Sizes - Candle To Your Eyes Album Artwork

Shapes And Sizes nearly always feel like little stories. It's not just singer Caila Thompson-Hannant's evocative lyrics -- the songs always wanted to end up in a different place than where they started. The results were sometimes uneven. But "Tell Your Mum," the first from their upcoming third album A Candle To Your Eyes gets it right. It'sdarker than most of their other songs, with lots of atmosphere (echo, feedback, signing synths) filling in between the song's moody clatter. "Last night I have a devil had given me / A dress to wear under my clothes..." Thompson-Hannant sings at one point. At another, it sounds as if she's panting out her words, fully dressed and possessed.
