This big announce was supposed to come days ago, and of course people (us) freaked that it didn’t. But as Goldenvoice President Paul Tollett put it, “We’re not stalling, we’re still working on the show. Everything we do is in service of the show, not in service of the announcement of the show.” Whether they were stalling or working or whatever, who cares: Coachella’s back in the blockbuster business.
Headliners: Paul McCartney (Friday), The Killers (Saturday), The Cure (Sunday). OK, maybe not insane enough for you. Yet. But as always, it’s in the fine print of the Indio poster that the party takes full shape. Also on Friday: Morrissey, Franz Ferdinand, Leonard Cohen, Conor Oberst, Beirut, Girl Talk, M. Ward, Crystal Castles, Buraka Som Sistema, the Hold Steady. For your Saturday: TV On The Radio, Band Of Horses, Fleet Foxes, Superchunk, Liars, Blitzen Trapper, Gang Gang Dance, Tinariwen, Ida Maria, Mastodon, Hercules & Love Affair. And Sunday? My Bloody fucking Valentine. (And Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Throbbing Gristle, PB&J, Antony, Lykke Li, Okkervil, Fucked Up, No Age, Vivan Girls, Gaslight Anthem, but yeah … MBV. Basically a double-headliner Sunday.)
Here’s the poster:

Boom.
Tickets are on sale (3-day passes at $270, single day at $100) over at coachella.com. See you there.

Everyone will be pissing thier pants over Sir Paul, but the fact that Throbbing Gristle is finally playing over here is totally worth the ticket price.
Superchunk!
solid
where’s the pavement reunion? or really any big reunion?
saturday blowssssssssss. chances are amy winehouse will bail and lol @ thievery corporation. sunday’s not that great either, except for MBV.
friday owns no problems there except i wonder why the hold steady are so low on the list
still i hope the rumors of bruce & an animal collective late night are true at bonnaroo
also damn arcade fire tour already we miss you
The Hold Steady gets smaller font than Peter, Bjorn, & John and Thievery Corporation? WTF?
Hmm maybe it’s because we need to work quite a bit harder to be anywhere near as fun to listen to or as creative as those artists. We consider ourselves lucky to be included in Coachella and to be jizzed over by blogs like this one. We don’t even get it! Ha! Finn, out.
hey Paul:
The reason Hold Steady gets down played is b/c Coachella people, like me, think that Hold Steady is WAY over rated compared to all of the other great artists out there.
We’ll be doing a special series for Coachella 2009, so stay tuned to http://indierockcafe.com
news flash dude:
the hold steady fucking suck.
Cloud Cult! Yay!
Sub My Morning Jacket for The Killers on Saturday night and you’ve got a great festival. Also, it would be great to have the Fleet Foxes, Band of Horses, and MMJ the same day so every can see how the DON”T sound the same.
Haz sad cuz no pavmentz or kullected ahnimuls!
sunday kinda blows
agreed.
the cure, my bloody valentine, public enemy, yeah yeah yeahs, paul weller, throbbing gristle, and sunday kinda blows? what the fuck is wrong with you?
And X! And Perry Farrell could be interesting…
Plus, there’s Clipse. Where’s the guy on ‘gum that’s always going off about Clipse? He’ll be happy.
Animal Collective or it didn’t happen
uhhhh leonard cohen, yall? that’s pretty amazing. however, with no pavement reunion, i don’t feel the need to hop trains from the east coast to see this.
I don’t see Katy Perry on this list.
I guess Ryan Seacrest isn’t the most trusted journalist in America after all.
win; MBV, Morrissey
Fail: Sir Paul, Franz Ferdinand, The Killers, Amy Winehouse, Thievery Corporation (lol), The Cure (probably fail), Yeah Yeah Yeahs, this comment.
Omission Fail: Radiohead, Animal Collective, Pavement reunion, John Lennon, the return of Jesus,
how is The Cure billed over My Bloody Valentine?
Ugh, the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s are still on the cultural radar? I saw them six years ago at Irving Plaza when they opened for Sleater-Kinney. They were awful. It would be fantastic to see Leonard Cohen, though.
Defamer broke this two days ago.
I want paveeemennnttt….
otherwise very pleased with saturday. friday is good but sunday only have mbv and like… lykke li.
def going day 2.
where the fuck is animal collective?
Maybe I’ll just go on Friday
so the “kids” love Macca & Leonard Cohen?!?! and has everyone forgotten why TG has not played in so long…a little matter of their lead singer being wanted for child pornography in Europe! still trying to be Glastonbury…still not getting there…
save your $270 and buy some good music for yourselves instead, boys & girls
i imagine animal collective will be a last minute surprise headliner announcement for sat.
Could we not sneak Johnny Marr onstage Friday night and finally get a real noteworthy reunion going?
oh man, then i could die happy
I just wanna get drunk and see the hold steady right now.
yeah, really the only way that band can be enjoyed.
Here’s my take on Coachella. I’ve put together my list of who to see at the fest and included a live video of each band. Lots of work, so enjoy!
wow, you’re so cool, brewster.
oops. website is http://www.thedumbingofamerica.wordpress.com. It’s a wordpress blog, so I’m not looking for clicks. Just trying to share with my fellow music lovers.
As much as I can half-stand Fleet Foxes, Band of Horses, & PB&J, I think they’re being rushed to the top of the line-up only making room for unknowns that have every chance of disappointing. I’d personally rather not have left that line-up so open to newcomers like that. Otherwise, it ain’t bad. (Would’ve put Macca on Sun., though)
Even when Macca’s got a new album to promote (which he will), the setlist is heavy on Beatles

Should be fun.
the small print is the best
Where is Pavement?! I was promised a Pavement Reunion! If they don’t get back together for ATP New York I will be pissed
No Animal Collective or Grizzly Bear= EPIC FAIL
Im hoping Pavement and Animal Collective play bonnaroo.
a lot of great artists!! man, I wish I could go. I’m gonna go into the corner, cry and suck my thumb now…
Killers as a headline is fucking lame as shit.
fuck this lineup
I definitely would have preferred the fake Coachella lineup poster over this one.
Where’s Jack Johnson? :(
What is this nonsense of the Killers headlining over Morrissey and My Bloody Valentine?!
I was hoping for Blur.
no RHCP?
ohwell sounded 2 good.
I fucking hate australia right now. perry farrell and henry rollins in the same festival. I cried.
and the fucking gaslight anthem
seriously stereogum, go ahead and continue to refuse coverage of such an awesome band
Macca, Moz and Leonard Cohen (does he have a cool nickname?) on the same day is pretty amazing. Since they went to the 3-day format, Friday’s usually been the weakest day. Not this year.
Friday & Saturday look great, Friday is way overbooked with talent, but Sunday is empty. Yeah Yeah Yeahs will be great, but the rest is not that amazing in my opinion.
Why is SHEPHARD FAIREY listed? What’s he going to do, spray paint for 30 minutes? I hope not, because that douchebag’s 15 minutes were up 15 minutes ago.
Sir Paul got the Colbert bump on Wednesday and look where he is now, headlining Coachella!
Saturday’s the best day, in my opinion. The Killers, Thievery Corporation, Mastodon, Fleet Foxes, Calexico, Dr. Dog, Blitzen Trapper.
Coachella overall is looking pretty good this year. Anyone as excited about Rothbury as I am?
animal collective>coachella
its growing on me
nobody appreciates good hip hop on stereogum…THEMSELVES is playing on sunday!
I was thinking of going to coachella but after seeing paul on the ticket I am glad to be two thousand miles away from it. Had my fill of him in the 60/70′s
They should keep the artists they have but reschedule them into different days like: Dadrock Friday (Moz, Macca, Killers, Weller) Trainwreck Saturday (Amy Winehouse, Brian Jonestown Massacre, TRAVISDJ-AM, the Horrors) & Awesome Sunday (Tinariwen, Mastadon, MBV, Throbbing Gristle) with a Special Fourth Magical Day featuring a reunited Pavement, Blur, Spacemen 3, Led Zeppelin & an exhumed & zombified Beatles!
Not really impressed with the lineup. Some good acts but not worth baking out there for them under allotted times.
beirut dr. dog and tinariwen should be good
dang….MMJ would have been awesome to see again
sunday isn’t looking so bad – MBV, public enemy, lykke li… if you plan on staying all 3 days you’re gonna need some survival tips tho: http://www.metrowize.com/coachella-survival-guide
the brian jonestowm massacre is either going to be a trainwreck or just amazing
the brian jonestowm massacre is either going to be a trainwreck or just amazing
the brian jonestowm massacre is either going to be a trainwreck or just amazing
the brian jonestown massacre is in smaller font then peter bjorn and john? !!??!!??!!?
wait i just heard that lemonwilde is on the coachella sampler for filter mag. why can’t i find which day they are playing!?
hey yeah i’m looking i had a friend tell me lemonwilde is going to be there somewhere too but i don’t know — if you hear anything they are by far one of the best new bands out there and worth every second
