They’re incredibly loud, have real presence, but somehow NYC’s Unearthly Trance manage to float beneath radars. The longtime sludgy, blackened doom power trio’s back with their appropriately titled fifth album V. It follows 2008′s Electrocution (and pairs well with 2006′s Trident). As with most things vocalist/guitarist Ryan Lipynsky touches (see Pollution, Villains, and especially USBM acts the Howling Wind and precursor Thralldom), there’s a strong intellectual, occult strain, a heavy sense of End Times running through it. It’s ballsy, punk, urban, hallucinatory, and exploratory — while maintaining a grounded no-bullshit precision. Take a listen while you research the song titles and admire Glyn Scrawled‘s Thelemic/Ancient Egyptian/Sumerian/alchemical-inspired cover art.
V is out 9/28 via Relapse.

Amazing album- so gritty, so intricate, so HEAVY. UT is far too underrated. One of the best metal bands on the planet, hands down.

I was never a big fan of previous Unearthly Trance stuff, but this is pretty great.
Best UT album yet! Additional vocals by Verni are a sick addition.
