Rolling Stone Top 30 Albums & Singles Of 2010

Weird that Kid Rock’s Born Free topped M.I.A.’s, but at least I now know John Mellencamp, Peter Wolf, and Elton John released albums this year. Otherwise, the Top 10′s very kind to hip-hop and the Black Keys (hip-hop by association?). The Top 50 Singles has its share of hip-hop and popular radio hits, as is the way with singles lists, but there are plenty of curve balls and old-timers, too. Cold War Kids are stoked.

  1. Really? REALLY?

  2. Glad to see Kid Rock made the list. Wait… WHAT?!

  3. List Overdose!!!!!11!! Quick, someone play all the top twenty albums from all the lists this year at the same time to clear the air!

  4. They need to get off Kayne’s dick…..

  5. And this is why Rolling Stone is the worst music mag in the business.

  6. Kid Rock > Beach House

  7. I dont need your pussy bitch, im on my own dick

  8. Did anyone notice the blatant pandering to the “indie crowd”. Sleigh Bells, Best Coast, Wavves, etc. The lists suck, but I like to think they are trying to give me what i want.

  9. Thanks Alex, I’ll take $1500 for “Most predictable end-of-year music list” please…

    • I’m sorry, the correct answer was “What is Spin Magazine”.

      • Rolling stone’s list:

12 John Mellencamp – No Better Than This <— Predictable
11 The Dead Weather – Sea of Cowards <— Predictable
10 LCD Soundsystem – This Is Happening
        09 Eminem – Recovery <— Predictable
08 Robert Plant – Band Of Joy <— Predictable
07 Drake – Thank Me Later <— Predictable

        Vs.

        SPIN's List:

        12 Yeasayer – Odd Blood
        11 Vampire Weekend – Contra
        10 Robyn – Body Talk Pt. 1
09 Kid Cudi – Man On The Moon II: The Legend Of Mr. Rager
        08 M.I.A. – Maya
        07 Grinderman – Grinderman 2
        06 Janelle Monae – The Archandroid <— UN-predictable
05 Jamey Johnson – The Guitar Song
04 LCD Soundsystem – This Is Happening
03 Arcade Fire – The Suburbs
        02 Deerhunter – Halcyon Digest <— UN-predictable
01 Kanye West- My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy <— Predictable

        U stand corrected.

        • SPIN is pretty predictable.

          MIA’s new record?? Terrible
          Yeasayer’s new record?? Disappointing
          Kid Cudi’s new record?? Underwhelming
Vampire Weekend maybe top 30, not 20.
Arcade Fire maybe top 10, not top 5.

        • I stand no such thing.

There is absolutely nothing unpredictable about Spin hyping LCD soundsystem, Arcade Fire, MIA, Robyn, Vampire Weekend, Grinderman and even Janelle Monae and Deerhunter, given their usual tone. On the flip side, I would never have expected Roling Stone to put Drake above Robert Plant, or the Black Keys at #2.

        • SPIN’S list is not perfect but is way better than rolling stones’s. Rolling stones is now like the grammys they just reward commercial success and not the artistic meaning. how could be artist like Drake and Eminem in the top 10?. But i also think that Dark fantasy was the best album of the year.

  10. There are songs I liked better, but Fuck You and Runaway as the top two songs of the year is a selection I can actually get behind.

    • I’m just glad to see Sade represented so high on the list. Was Rolling Stone the only magazine whose staff actually got laid in 2010?

  11. The most glaring omission at first glance has got to be Plastic Beach.

  12. What ever credibility the list gains by having Beach House, it immediately loses by having KID ROCK & Taylor Swift ahead of it. : |

New Vampire Weekend, Eminem & Drake are all trash, but they ended up in the top 10. Bad list however you want to spin it.

  13. Limited props for Superchunk inclusion. I stress “limited.”

  14. Face palm to Kid Rock. Where the fuck is Sufjan on these lists? Is everyone deaf or dumb or both?

  15. kanye is everywhere. totally fed up just reading his name

  16. Totally fed up with people bitching about reading Kanye’s name everywhere.

It’s not his fault that he put out a great album. It is actually refreshing to hear something that someone put out which took a little bit of effort. His newest album is more of a piece of artwork, perhaps along the lines of an installation rather than just an album. His album, short film, G.O.O.D. Friday releases, etc. all led up to his masterpiece. What an effort and totally deserves the recognition that it is getting.

Too bad all the haters come out when someone does something good. Happens all the time (Arcade Fire haters, Animal Collective haters, etc…) Wait till someone names next year’s best album. One month later, everyone will be talking trash about it.

    • Not always true as I thought MPP was the best album last year whereas kanyes was not the best this year.

      • Kanye had a damn fine album. Not quite album of the year, but pretty high up there. Titus, The National, Sufjan and Arcade Fire had better albums. I also liked that New Pornographers album, but that is totally subjective.

      • I completely agree that MPP was the best album last year. I LOVED that album. But ask a lot of bloggers now about Animal Collective and MPP and they will tell you the backlash that that specific album received due to the enormous amount of press it got for being Album of the Year. So many “hipsters” bash that album now because it became TOO popular or TOO mainstream. When in reality, it was just a damn good album. Just like the new Kanye album. So what if Kanye West isn’t the most unknown band/artist/musician. He still put out a freakin’ good album that plays through cohesively from beginning to end…

And trust me, I’m not a Kanye lover. I love this album though. A true critic needs to seperate their personal distaste for someone and just the music they put out. Too many times people take into their own personal taste when critiquing music (which is fine), but creates a totally subjective list. Therefore, I really do enjoy the list of top 10 singles according to Rolling Stone as it includes some top 40 pop music as well as some independently released singles.

With that being said, even though there were many great independent singles released last year, I think Single Ladies was by far the best single released.

    • Was a utmost Kanye hater until I heard his new album. Ya, he’s still pretty self delusional and almost a caricature then personality, but I listened to that record from start to finish and was extremely impressed. I’d def put it in the top 5.It’s actually my number two.

  17. I mean, their albums list is just totally fucked when you compare it to the singles list….
    It’s really unsettling.

  18. This was a terrible year for singles.

  19. Rolling Stone is an agenda rag now…their agenda is to propagate far left wing a$$ kissing and to put vanilla flavor of the month pop starlets and teen tarts on their covers as minimally dressed as possible. Rolling Stone no longer functions as legitimate journalism or music criticism. 2010′s list was probably the worst yet I have seen from them in a long long time. Kid Rock? Elton John?Eminem? Taylor Swift? Really really REALLY? And I like how they try to placate their wobbly selections with some lame insight, like comparing Kid Rock to Bob Seger. You SUCK Rolling Stone.Go watch Jonas Brothers on Tivo you plastic bottom of the barrel twits.

  20. Glad The Black Keys’ “Everlasting Light” is so high on that singles list. Great track.

  21. Has anybody listened to this Jamey Johnson record? Is it good?

  22. Where the hell was Joanna Newsom on all of these lists released today?

  23. So uh, the person who wrote the “Infinity Guitar” text didn’t even listen to the song, did they? And in general, I’m kind of wondering why bother with blurbs for the singles list if you’re going to phone it in so hard.

  24. I like these bands…

This is my list, and I am sticking to it…

    1. School of Seven Bells
    2. Owen Pallett
    3. The National
    4. Women
    5. Diamond Rings (People need to hear this!)
    6. Sleigh Bells
    7. Wolf Parade
    8. Black Mountain
    9. Steve Mason (criminally underrated ex Beta Band)
    10. Bombay Bicycle Club

  25. Write About Love ya mental defective cunts! aye yay yay

  26. Wow, I’m glad to know that Kid Rock, Taylor Swift, and Kings of Leon all had better albums out this year than Big Boi and Yeasayer, not to mention the absent Gorillaz, Surfer Blood, and Titus Andronicus. I wasn’t sure about that. Thanks Rolling Stone.

  27. I’ll give them a little credit. “We Used to Wait”, “White Sky” and “Everlasting Light” WERE the best songs on their respective albums, and I’m glad someone recognized it.

  28. We live in a world where Taylor Swift is better than Robyn.

  29. Wait, Kid Rock had an album out and people actually liked it?
    Where is Gorillaz’s “Plastic Beach”?

  30. Observation: people constantly complain about the predictability of these lists, then complain when artists that should be “predictable” are not on the list

This list is pretty meh (terrible at points), but respect for putting jamey johnson in the top 5 list.. don’t really like that record too much, but still enjoy the fact that they didn’t add another “elton john” type in that spot.

  31. PLASTIC BEACH! Maybe if Kanye did the intro instead of Snoop Dogg?

  32. hey everyone, rolling stone doesn’t like the music you like as much as you do…ever.

also, I’m a big kanye and drake fan, and i think taylor swift is totally adorable and catchy and I still expected nothing from this list. if you don’t like any of them, you were either born yesterday or felt like bitching because OF COURSE you’re gonna hate this list.

  33. Kanye again, please. There was definitely more deserving artists this year!!

  34. ¿Quieres escuchar todas las canciones del nuevo álbum de Juanes antes que todo el mundo? > http://stats.instyledm.com/juanes/splashpage/index.html

  35. Is this a serious music-magazine? (Has it ever been? Why the fuck does it still exist?).

  36. I totally disagree with these 2 lists.. i believe ‘recovery’ should be at number one..lyrically its way more better than kanye’s album..Rolling stone got it wrong this time..

also runaway is good but not as good as to be number one..i believe number one song should be ‘airplanes’ by B.o.B but you guys failed to put it on the list but you put Keisha on the list, are you kidding me..i want to know what you guys looked and what this list is based on, was it wackness or lame lyrics because thats what she is..

YOU GOT IT WRONG ROLLING STONES..EMINEM SHOULD BE NUMBER ONE
