“The Afterlife” comes from Paul Simon’s forthcoming 12th studio album So Beautiful Or So What, the same collection that brought us the “It’s Gonna Rain”-reminiscent opener “Getting Ready For Christmas Day.” The rollicking second track “The Afterlife” follows “Christmas Day” on the tracklist — it’s a more straightforward, narrative, and (at least musically) sunny track that looks at waiting in line after you croak. Vampire Weekend fans should enjoy.
So Beautiful Or So What is out 4/12 via Concord Music Group.

Vampire Weekend fans might also like a little album called Graceland. An album Paul Simon recorded after listening to Contra on repeat while he drove laps around Elvis’ old house.
Was the “Vampire Weekend fans should enjoy” necessary? In breaking news, the next time Bob Dylan releases an album, Stereogum is going to give the youngins a heads up that they might like it if they are into Conor Oberst.
The Vampire Weekend mention was a joke. Because exactly.
People seem to get pissy about the Paul Simon/Vampire Weekend comparisons, but really I don’t see how you can listen to Vampire Weekend and NOT hear Paul Simon.
They’re so similar I’m surprised we don’t hear comments about it more often, although it’s probably because someone always seems to take it personally. (Which is odd, to be honest, unless you’re a member of Vampire Weekend. And last I checked, there were only about four guys in that band…)
