Pale Chalice - Afflicting The Dichotomy Of Trepid Creation EP

Flenser’s the young San Francisco black metal/doom/sludge label that’s given us material by Bosse-de-Nage, Palace of Worms, Ghast, and Panopticon along with Necrite’s Sic Transit Gloria Mundi, a fine collection minus the wrongheaded Sunn O))) worship that capped it. Afflicting The Dichotomy Of Trepid Creation, the intense forthcoming debut EP by raw Bay Area quintet Pale Chalice, shows more restraint; or, at least, it shows a lack of restraint in more interesting ways. The vocalist’s named Ephemeral Domignostika, for instance, and they tear through twisting, claustro-insane black metal focusing on “introverted psychosis” and “dimensional anomalies” (thanks, Metal Archives, aka Pale Chalice street team) with song titles like “Transplant Of Dimensional Recourse.” The quarter-speed punk riffs floating amid the other blacker ambiance on that one wins it for me, but other folks might be more impressed by an American black metal band going for an orthodox sound with no “post”‘s attached. Listen:

Afflicting The Dichotomy Of Trepid Creation:

01 “Transplant Of Dimensional Recourse”
02 “Command Of The Formless”
03 “Caressed By A Feeble Flame”
04 “Ascend The Idyllic Sphere”

Afflicting The Dichotomy Of Trepid Creation is out 3/8 via The Flenser. Hear some more at MySpace.

  1. There are other kinds of metal than black metal, you know.

    • I do know. Did you listen to Maruta on Friday?

Look for a KEN mode surprise next week.

    • I guess you missed Young Widows, Boris, The Swan King etc. recently. Bummer.

I love the suffocating style of vocal on this. It’s pretty far upfront in the mix which is cool, adds a different sort of heaviness to it than the typical barely audible black metal vocal.

  2. I really liked what I heard of Pale Chalice. I’ll have to try and remember to get this when it comes out.

Thanks for bringing more new stuff to my ears, Brandon.

  3. “an American black metal band going for an orthodox sound with no “post”’s attached.” Thumbs up to that. I’m liking this. I’m starting to feel as if the whole American “post-black metal” scene has peaked (I’m pretty underwhelmed by the debut from DeafHeaven which I was really looking forward to). These guys have studied their Watain/Darkthrone and that’s not a bad thing.

  4. I’m digging this. Band number umptymillion HTC has turned me on to.
