Lollapalooza 2011

This makes 20 years of Lollapalooza, the once nomadic alt.rock festival that is now the quintessential corporate multi-day destination-fest. This year’s party runs from August 5th to August 7th, with Perry promising “festival haute cuisine imagined by one of the Windy City’s top chefs,” though one of the best things about Lolla is that you can get to some decent restaurants on Michigan Ave. in less time than some of those food lines anyway. But that makes for a nice press quote! And the headliners make for some nice big-media press quotes, too, big acts like Eminiem, Foo Fighters, Coldplay, Muse, Cee Lo Green, My Morning Jacket, A Perfect Circle, and the Cars. Also performing that weekend are Beirut, Arctic Monkeys, Big Audio Dynamite, Ween, Ratatat, Death From Above 1979, Crystal Castles, Lykke Li, Local Natives, the Kills, the Mountain Goats, Sleih Bells, Smith Westerns, Best Coast, the Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Titus Andronicus, and Tennis.

  1. They forgot to add Ploppy & The Dirt Whispers…they’re headlining the Stinkwind Tent.

  2. “This makes 20 years of Lollapalooza”

Wow that makes me feel ancient. I remember my friend’s older brother taking a group of us to the 1993 shows. I was front row for Tool until I got nailed in the back of the head and decided to step out of the pit. Dinosaur Jr. was the highlight of ’93 in my opinion. I think I was 12 or 13 that year.

    • it may have been the same year i was there at randals island and metallica was headling the show, i was about 16 with my cousin and we rushed the stage and made our way pretty close to the front when a realllyyy big dude behind us told us in the nicest way possible that if we didnt get to a safer place someone would trample us…

      ahh good times.

  3. Someone must have been taking a nap while pitchfork booked their fest.

  4. last year: 11-12 bands i wanted (and did) see.
    this year: ….2-3? maybe?

  5. Wow, this is a terrible lineup

  6. bummer.

  7. I thought they would have taken out all the stops for their 20th. I mean even outside lands, in its 4th year has a better lineup.

  8. It seems that there is a greater amount of festival overlap this year at all the summer festivals (Coachella, Sasquatch, Bonnaroo, Outside Lands, Lollapalooza) than in past years. Since the Coachella lineup (which I wasn’t to stoked on either (great time there nonetheless), every lineup seems to similar to each other to rustle excitement about individual fests.

  9. I’m not sayin this is a good lineup, but why do people feel the need to say how terrible a show’s lineup is? No matter who’s playing people will always be dissatisfied. I mean they could have Michael Jackson and people would still bitch.

    • I agree. Complaining about lineups like these just shows how jaded some people can be. There are a ton of great bands from top to bottom on this bill. I think the problem is that the festival market is just too over-saturated at this point.

    • not me, man. if they trotted his corpse out there and were able to make him dance and sing, i’d buy 100 tickets to this shit.

    • some people could have bought early bird tickets.

  10. Yes, there are good bands. But come on don’t be so full of yourself, people come from all over the world to see this festival and it is not up to par with others. It appears to be a down year for festivals though. Not everyone can afford 300 bucks for a festival ticket just to see a few bands they want!

    • That’s exactly it though. People come from everywhere to see these bands so of course the variety of music tastes at these festivals will be huge. No one is going to like everyone there. People go for different reasons. And lets face it, plenty of people attend these festivals that don’t write on music blogs and aren’t as nerdy about it as we are. They see four massively successful artists headlining and they’ll attended. Coldplay, Muse, and Eminem? Those names just prove that these festivals aren’t made for hardcore music fans anymore. They’re for the general public, and as far as I can tell they’ve done a great job appealing to that public with this lineup.

Besides there are still some great acts playing. i wouldn’t mind seeing about half of the acts listed.

  11. Not too big on the headliners. At glance this looks inferior to Coachella’s line up. If I lived in the Chicago area I would go. But it’s not enough IMO to travel to.

and A Perfect Circle? I completely forgot about this band…..

  12. But Guys!!!! COLDPLAY IS HEADLINING…

Right? That’s totes the big draw this year. Chris Martin?! He hangs out with Jay-Z! Or at least his wife, Gwyneth Paltrow, DEFINITELY hangs out with Jay-Z! What does that even mean? Oh right, abso nothing. Also, anybody care to explain this Four Headlininers – Three Day Festival? Get snubbed, SOME BAND.

Primavera wins this year, hands down.

  13. Wow, really glad I’m going to pitchfork fest instead.

  14. It’s an okay lineup. It really just falls flat of the whole ’20th Anniversary!’ hype.

  15. Terrible lineup… music today is shit.

  16. Wow, haters gon’ hate. I’m psyched for this. The mid-tier acts are great.

People are overly focused on the headliners–but even with regard to them, as someone who frequents this blog; has an above-the-average-American interest in music; and has spent an above-the-average-American amount of time studying and working in the industry; I can say with some decent confidence that all of the headliners are there for a reason.

You can’t mark their success and credit down with a they-suck, music-today-sucks, festivals-suck, popular-taste sucks sort of argument. Maybe it’s your taste?

  17. Ween and The Cars, that about it. Totes agree with people commenting on festival overlap. And the “headliners?” Em, Muse, Foo Fighters, and Coldplay? Hah! The market is so over-saturated wit these bros, it’s ridiculous. Outside Lands for sure. Kinda pricey and the set up sucks (imo) but the fucking Shins are playing and dat be enough for me (toro too.)

  18. The problem I have with this lineup is that I have seen, or will see most of theses bands (besides the headliners, and in some cases the headliners as well) in small or club venues. It seems that most of these acts actually work better in small clubs and aren’t going to translate into a festival lineup well. I understand the larger headliners work, but for the most part I would rather see these bands in a club with less than 100 people.

  19. Still plenty of bands to fill every day. Won’t be making it, think I’m gonna save it for ACL which sounds like it could be a real winner this Fall –

  20. i wish this band would play lollapalooza:

  21. who’s complaining about the lineup here?! are you high?! this blows everything except Bonnaroo out of the water. AND it’s a tour!

A Perfect Circle. Stop right there. A Perfect Circle!

The Cars, Big Audio Dynamite, Deftones, Ween… Sleigh Bells, The Kills and Arctic Monkeys for current relevance and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

This is easily the best pool of talent Stateside this season. And for the record, headliners are throwaway; it’s the meat and filler that really counts.

  22. i live in australia and this lineup seems fucking awesome compared to what we are getting for our big festival this year ( http://splendourinthegrass.com/#). you damn americanos are so spoilt

  23. A progress report for The Avalanches is in order plz.

  24. Can’t wait to see The Vaccines play August 5th here’s a sample of their live show. They’re playing early at 12:45 pm so don’t be late! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBAxFLzA6a8
