Yesterday was New York’s first very hot and sticky day of the year, and while it’s not officially summertime, soon enough we’ll all be eating ices and going to the beach CONSTANTLY. Not sitting in our apartments blogging I’m sure. Since our favorite summertime memories will remain soundtracked by the music of the day, it’s probably not too early to decide now what the Song Of The Summer 2011 should be. You don’t want to link next month’s Independence Day barbecue forever with “Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall.” Today Vulture presents a slightly tweaked version of Buzzfeed‘s last 30 years of summer songs, and it seems like a pretty accurate list. So take a look below and fill in the blank: 2011. My guess for the hit that will be most inescapable in the coming weeks: Katy Perry’s “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),” Beyoncé’s “Party” (Feat. André 3000), Adele’s “Turning Tables,” or a Pitbull song. As much as we love Iceage, there’s a strong chance our national Song Of The Summer won’t be by a Danish punk band. But hey — nominate whatever you want. We’ll tally the results and present them next week.

Breakbot – Fantasy
Apologies to The Hologram Man et al, but Summer 2009 belonged to “Lisztomania”.
what about kid cudi – day n night?
Yay for referring to Will.I.Am as The Hologram Man!
no way man.
during summer 2009, you absolutely could not escape ‘i got a feeling.’ i went on a vegas trip that summer and i distinctly remember hearing that song about 4 times per hour, all day every day… in every casino, every store, from random cars blasting it while they drove by, on the radio in every cab i took, etc. it was terrible. the memory still haunts me to this day.
1901 > Lisztomania
Wu Lyf – Dirt. Fo really.

Bon Iver – Calgary
We can all dream…it’ll never happen and I’m a Bon Iver fan.
The song of the summer will be written by me because I’m gonna become a huge buzzband like super soon. Gonna change music, and save it rock n’ roll for all you guys! :)
PSYCHED!!
I’m really tempted to say “Super Bass” by Nicki Minaj…
But I’m hoping “Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)” is suddenly released as a single and becomes a huge hit, because it deserves it.
p.s, summer of 1999 totally belonged to “Steal My Sunshine” by LEN
Up Up Up by Givers
nice one ;)
yes yes yes
absolutely!
good call!
Love that song!
that’ll be the song of my summer.

wake, bake, skate – FIDLAR
seriously,
do you like fun?
it is all about having the good times in the sumer times
Battles – Ice Cream
I agree on the Battles choice. For me, anything off of the King of the Beach album was the song of summer 2010.
the correct answer to this question is “Super Bass”

i’d go with givers – up, up, up or friendly fires – hawaiian air
i think it will be party rock anthem from LMFAO
“Mornin’ by Star Slinger !
3. Killin’ the Vibe by Ducktails
2. Far Nearer by Jamie xx
1. Real is a Feeling by Pictureplane
By the way guys…all great songs, but you seem to have forgotten who controls what is a hit and what isn’t. M effing TV!! We represent the select few who seeks out good music and has great taste. One day guys the tables will turn, but until that day the only props our favorite bands are gonna get are in car commercials, movies or Apple advertisements. But what do i know?
Mediocrityisthenewgenius.com
Rolling the Deep – Adele!!!!
Er … Rolling in the Deep – Adele
Not a chance regardless. Rolling in the Deep is ancient. It definitely doesn’t make me want to run through a sprinkler.
Rumor Has It is slightly more sprinkler-running-inducing, yes?
Well if I could trust the general public’s taste, I would prefer Eyes Be Closed by Washed Out. Not sprinkle music but laying on the beach music.
young galaxy- ‘we have everything’
Definitely “Second Chance” by Peter Bjorn and John!
Bosco Delrey – Cool Out
Bibio – Take off Your Shirt
very much like take off your shirt despite the fact that it is very un-bibio of him to do.
“Super Bass”!!! I can’t seem to get enough of that song. It’s got the best hook Nicki’s come up with so far and excellent rapped verses. It’s both genuine and sweet, and silly and fun. It’s the perfect summer song, because rap and pop are both great for the summer, and this combines both very well.
Nikki Minaj is beyond awful. I can’t fathom how a more irritating, contrived and woefully unoriginal artist could ever exist. All of her ‘characters’ are just different artists styles she’s stolen because she’s incapable of synthesizing her influences and adding anything specifically ‘Nicki’. Super Bass is no exception the song is junk. A recycled Katy Perryesque chorus with her random always-cringe-worthy inflections as she tries to be Lil Kim or Busta. After all her gimmicks I can’t understand why anyone with any experience with hip-hop wouldn’t be thoroughly annoyed if not downright offended. But I’m glad you somehow find it enjoyable good for you.
Stop hatin’! Though I did like your little qualification there are the end.
I enjoy her characters thoroughly. With the prior knowledge that she studied theater in college, to me she seems like a very enthusiastic drama kid having the time of her life by acting out in very flamboyant ways–and making tons of money and (IMO OF COURSE!) some great music along the way. I also think she has some great rhymes and very clever lines; if not quite female Lil Wayne-level absurdity yet, she seems to be approaching it.
I will grant you that about half of “Pink Friday” is cringe-worthy drivel, but she also has some great songs and guest spots on other peoples’ songs. (“Roman’s Revenge,” “Super Bass,” “Did It On ‘Em,” “Moment 4 Life,” “Massive Attack,” and “Catch Me,” specifically. Also of course her mixtapes. And for guest spots, “Lil Freak” by Usher; ” “Till The World Ends Remix” by Brtney Spears; “Teqkilla Remix” by M.I.A. and of course no one can forget “Monster” by that jackass hip hop dude.)
It’s been what, like a year and a half since their internet buzz started, and over a year since their album came out, so shouldn’t Sleigh Bell’s “Rill Rill” be blowing up right now?
I seriously would not understand if that song didn’t catch on like Florence & The Machine, La Roux, etc.
Definitely! Or Infinity Guitars. Or anything by them.
Ha, yeah, I would be so pleased if “Infinity Guitars” caught on! I would just expect it to be “Rill Rill” though, just seems like the sort of uber-accessible, uber-catchy song that has crossover appeal written all over it.
Right now I’m going to say Pumped Up Kicks by Foster The People. That song is so good & just has that great summer vibe to it.
yeah!
I’m On One is pretty dope but there is still time for a song to take over the summer. Gucci Gucci by Kreayshawn is another big contender.
Indeed! Kreayshawn’s “Gucci Gucci” it is!
As far as the indie jam for the summer, Senator by Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks
Killing the Vibe – Ducktails + Panda Bear
Sore Spores – Bobby
Howolding Girls – Birthdays
I live in Florida so its been summer here for over a month. these 3 songs have been my constant soundtrack so far.
If we’re talking pop music I don’t really care as long as its not that god awful “where them girls at song”
its winter here…
“HooDoo” – Maniac
“Lorelai” – Fleet Foxes
anything off Shwayze’s “The W’s”
oh, and “Work To Do” by Mayer Hawthorne
ALL OF YOU CAN SHUT UP. MOS DEF PUMPED UP KICKS BY FOSTER THE PEOPLE.

OK, it needs to be acknowledged that Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” was the summer song in 2006, definitely NOT Nelly Furtado.
You could easily go with Black Keys “Tighten Up” or LCD’s “Drunk Girls” for summer 2010, too.
2011? I nominate Black Lips “Go Out And Get It.”
“Down in the Valley” by Head and the Heart is also a possible dark horse
No “Drunk Girls” was not the song of last summer. Maybe “Swim” by Surfer Blood or “Diplomat’s Son” by Vampire Weekend.
When I think of past summer songs, “Hey Ya!”, “Crazy”, “Umbrella”, and “The Way I Are” definitely come to mind, and yet only one of those is on this list. Seriously, how is “Hey Ya!” not on this list? I don’t know what this year’s summer jam will be, but hopefully it will be something awesome.
“Hey Ya!” was released on September 9, 2003. A little too late to be The Song of the Summer.
Memories of the future – Handsome furs. hands down.
Oh we can dream….. Not with that album art though!
http://soundcloud.com/lordjeff/spillwave
was MGMT’s ‘kids’ not the summer song of 08?
It was indeed – Katy Perry? Pffft!
I feel like it should be “Firework” by Katy Perry…even though it was released last year. It’s been everywhere this summer.
“Ego” – Burial & Four Tet & Thom Yorke.
now, if only someone would make a better rip from the vinyl..
I gotta go with Ice Cream by Battles as well.
“Go Outside” – Cults
As for my Summer Jamz so far I gotta go with:
Players Ballad – Big K.R.I.T. or Rave On – Cults
But I don’t think I have discovered my real summer jam yet.
Oh land- Son of a Gun..
Coldplay- Every Tear Drop is a Waterfall
Adele- Roling in the Deep
Fittz and the Tantrums- Moneygrabber
Santigold fet Karen 0- Go
are my top choices
Freaks On Floor – Freedom Peace & Me
http://soundcloud.com/freaks-on-floor/freedom-peace-me
Washed Out – Eyes Be Closed
There’s no doubt in my mind that this or any song off the upcoming LP will undoubtedly become the song of the summer…
Death Cab for Cutie – Some boys
Warm Heart of Africa – The Very Best
Fucked Up – Turn The Season
What about Right Said Fred – I´m too Sexy?
Right Said Fred – I´m too Sexy?
2011 Summer Song: Two Door Cinema Club – Something Good can Work
Givers – “Up Up Up”
You can vote for that as the best indie song of the summer. Definitely good either way though.
Cults – Oh My God
YACHT – Dystopia
Beastie Boys – Make Some Noise
TV Girl – If You Want It (You Got It)
Panda Bear – Last Night At The Jetty
Beirut – East Harlem
and I’ll have to care over “LCD Sounsystem – Home” from 2010… it’s just that damn good.
Usually I get kind of annoyed when someone makes a post just rattling off a bunch of songs, bands, or albums, but having listened to all of these songs*, your list seems quite solid and well-considered.
I’m surprised this is the first time I’ve seen “Last Night At the Jetty” suggested. I know it came out a while ago, and I’ve undoubtedly listened to it well over a hundred times, but I could no joke listen to it a hundred more times and not get tired of it at all, it’s that good. Ditto for all of “Tomboy”–and “Surfer’s Hymn” is another particularly great summer tune.
*Full disclosure, I hadn’t heard “East Harlem” or “If You Want It (You Got It)” before reading your post. However, I did my research, and am glad I did, because I rather enjoyed both songs. I also relistened to “Oh My God,” “Make Some Noise,” and “Dystopia” because they’re all really good but I haven’t listened to them enough.
Pumped Up Kicks or Ice Cream for sure.
Um.. 2009 was Sweet Disposition by The Temper Trap. Unescapable during that summer.
Abducted by Cults.
Machu Picchu by The Strokes.
Alternative: Foster The People “Helena Beat”
Rock: Foo Fighters “Walk”
Urban: Beyonce “Party”
Pop: Britney Spears “I Wanna Go” and Katy Perry “Last Friday Night”
Adult: Coldplay “Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall”
Rhythmic: Nicki Minaj “Super Bass”
Indie songs don’t really stand a chance, but so far, I’d put Cults (“Abducted”) and Antlers (“I Don’t Want Love”) on top.
Overall, probably Britney, Katy, and The Foo Fighters. Beyonce would’ve had it in the bag with “Countdown,” but foolishly ignored it.
What the hell is ‘Adult’ and ‘Rhythmic’? And I thought ‘Urban’ was a horrible categorization. Besides, all ‘adults’ I know despise Coldplay.
LOL @ “rhythmic.” what are you, the digital cable tv music stations?
Urban seems racist.
Love how everyone’s hating on Nicki Minaj. I feel bad for you all, honestly.
It’s interesting how there are so many comments supporting “Super Bass” for Song of the Summer, yet they all have thumbs down. “Super Bass” seems to wide support, but also a handful of very bitter detractors.
super bass is pure, unadulterated garbage. and i don’t see why that opinion would make you feel bad for me. do you also feel bad for me because i’m not into katy perry?
Why would you feel bad for me for thinking that a song is really, really terrible? How Minaj has managed to seemingly gain some indie credibility is beyond me. The odd amusing line and semi-interesting vocal inflection do not make up for a multitude of the same old boring pop sins.
i think it’ll have to be “edge of glory” by lady gaga…especially if clarence clemons doesn’t make it…
summertime by dj jazzy jeff and the fresh prince was def the summer jam of 1991. though, i do remember that bryan adams song being everywhere.
For me it’s Battles – Ice Cream or Cults – Abducted but looking at the list above it’ll end up being something irredeemably shite.
Hey, man, “Eye of the Tiger” was… Er, never mind. Battles is a good choice.
Go Outside by Cults, probably a Cults song of Foster the People
“The Look” by Metronomy, without a doubt. It’s the perfect summer song; it’s catchy, fun, and memorable.
That or Battles’ “Ice Cream”. I would pick “The Look”, first, though.
I’ve really been digging these for my summer tunes:
Junior Boys “Banana Ripple”
Hooray For Earth “Sails”
Washed Out “Eyes Be Closed”
Memory Tapes “Wait In The Dark”
therapies son – rose red rose
Unknown Mortal Orchestra – How Can U Love Me.
or
Cults – Never Saw the Point
fuck yes, i can’t stop listening to how can u love me.
the naked and famous- girls like you
One more for “Super Bass”
Unknown Mortal Orchestra – Ffunny Ffrends
Vetiver – Fog Emotion
I know this may be an unpopular answer, but for me it is
“Monster” – by Paramore. That song is so rockin.
Novacane – Lil’ Frankie Ocean
Am I missing something here? One look at the list will tell you the song of the summer is going to belong to something so nauseatingly mainstream that it is INESCAPABLE. Would I love to live in a world where everywhere I went they were playing Panda Bear or UMO? Yeah, but I don’t.
The summer is going to belong to Lady Gaga or Adele. And you ll know it’s the truth.
I’m for Super Bass as well
Party Rock Anthem all the way. EVERYDAY I’M SHUFFLIN!
