Frances Bean Cobain has done a pretty good job staying out of the spotlight, but now that’s she’s all grown up — goth, inked, and gorgeous — we may be seeing more of her. The child of Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love (who lost custody of her two years ago) turns 19 this month, and has been pursuing visual art and the occasional music project in addition to modeling. (Remember, Ryan Adams stole her trust fund so you may wanna buy some of her work.) Frances recently posed for various artistically grungy B&W photos you can view at Hedi Slimane’s site; take a look, it’ll make you feel old.

She’s pretty.
I get this feeling Steve Winwood would disagree…
I thought about giving him credit for that quote, but then I glanced at those pictures again and thought “no wait… she IS pretty.”
(does S. Winwood frequent the stereogum comments, too? I haven’t seen him around in a while…)
Yep, attractive parents have attractive children. Also, stop smoking, Francis Bean!
Poor kid. Those horrible tattoos really tell that she’s Courtney’s genes
Yeah, with genes she got from both her not-exactly-mentally-stable parents, she should probably just pre-emptively start going to therapy and AA meetings right now. Get it over with.
HAHA Pre-emptive therapy: that’s hilarious! AA is awful though, because they tell people to start out by “admitting” that they are “powerless” over alcohol. HOGWASH! That establishes the wrong mindset for overcoming an addiction. People need to realize that they are powerful, spiritual beings with free will. No one should ever think that she is a slave to a damned chemical.
alright stereogum, that’s enough.
oh also these photos are so Hedi of Hedi. I mean, he does it well, the hair in the face teen angst gutter punk portraiture but it’s maybe getting a bit tired now.
I thought I cancelled my subscription to GQ?
It made me feel incredibly sad. Poor girl. Especially as if you scroll further down that page you get to a set of photos of another black-haired, tattooed young woman, Amy Winehouse. Fucking Hedi Slimane and his misery-chic. Hate it. I’d rather see Frances Bean Cobain looking empowered and happy, as if, just maybe, she could escape her parents’ grim legacy. Not these, which place her firmly in the midst of it.
So you would rather have the daughter of a suicide and a well-publicized drug addict look all jovial and carefree? Me too! I mean, I hope she’s happy and doing well and all that. But, at the same time, it seems like it might just be disingenuous for anyone to pretend like she’s not “firmly in the midst” of her “parent’s legacy” to begin with…I mean that’s why we’re even paying attention to her. Also, I haven’t looked at many model-type photo-shoots but I don’t think they’re encouraged to smile and look happy?
I don’t know exactly how much we can gather about her thoughts behind these photos just from seeing the photos themselves. Other than she probably likes the kind of poses she made in these photos.

Yesssssss, my innocuous song title comment is playing right into my bid for lowest comment of the week
It really is a shame that Courtney Love exists
Sooo sad.She speaks VERY highly of you.
I’m a huge Kurt and Courtney fan and I’m always surprised how Frances has managed to stay out of the tabloids. She looks absolutely gorgeous in the pictures, however it saddens me that she’s only 19 years old and already has so many tattoos.
I wonder what her favorite band is.
Oh I guess Jeff Buckley…according to her tattoos.
She looks like Courtney when she’s frowning, but looks more like Kurt when she smiles. Weird.
Don’t we all?

CAUSE?WHAT CAUSE?
God gracious, I feel old all of a sudden.
So, because she’s tattooed and has black hair, she’s apparently a very sad and disturbed individual? I need to go out and tell all my black haired, tattooed friends to start acting more like the stereotypes they are supposed to resemble!
I think it’s just a little too predictable. Come on, you have to admit, it would be much more interesting if Cobain and Love’s daughter grew up wearing bright colors and an anti-smoking advocate.
