Foster The People are arguably the big alt-rock story of the year — the band who managed to cross over to SNL and the Ryan Seacrest top-40 radio show without actually having to spend any actual time in the indie trenches. But even with $2,000 on the line, three of the geniuses on a recent episode of Jeopardy had no idea who they were, despite the most gallingly obvious of clues. Observe:

Did you really expect them to know? I feel like the internet separates social groups. There’s so much information people naturally filter what they get.
And I like the things you guys post so I follow Stereogum. But there’s lots of different people out there and it doesn’t really surprise me that some don’t know about Foster the People.
For example, some people legitimately (not ironically) like movies like Step Up 1-3, Fast & Furious 1-5 etc….maybe I’m making no sense….but I feel like I am…
Do you really need to be an indie band first before you become an alt-rock success story, though. Each year, there’s always one of these type of bands. The Killers, The Strokes and MGMT come to mind as the biggest ones over the past decade. All you have to do is look at who KROQ radio out in Los Angeles is playing.
