Next year — next month, to be more specific — Matthew Dear follows up 2010′s excellent Black City LP with Headcage, a four-track EP recorded in Brooklyn’s Rare Book Room studio and due 1/17 via Ghostly. It features vocals from the Drums’ Jonny Pierce on a track, because Dear’s obviously a fan of that band. The EP’s title track features Matthew singing over a superb, churning polyrhythmic electro production by Fever Ray affiliates Van Rivers and the Subliminal Kid, who sound like they took cues from “Shock The Monkey” and compressed its pulse into a minimal techno vamp. It is satisfying. Download it:

this guy’s a genius!
I clicked this because I thought the artwork looked cool. It reminded me of the original artwork for LOOP’s Heaven’s End. But just my luck, the music turned out to be a cultural reference of a difference sort, the awful Kraftwerk song that was the theme to the Sprockets skit on SNL.
