At a recent San Francisco stop on the Portlandia tour, Thao & Mirah joined the show’s two stars, Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen, to cover Salt-N-Pepa’s “Push It,” basically one of the most perfect songs in the history of the English language. It’s impossible to tell whether they’re joking, but everyone seems to be having fun, so whatever. Watch it below.
The guy with the beanbag and the guy with the cowbell clearly deserve to be running Portlandia characters. Are they running Portlandia characters? I haven’t seen every episode.

If you said to me that Thao Nguyen and Carrie Brownstein were going to be nearby and guaranteed that they would play “Push It”, then said I’d have to pay $100 to go, I would’ve been running to an ATM before you finished the sentence.
Sam here. Unfortunately too many people also agree with you as I’ve been trying to find tickets online for their tour and have had no luck yet.
Thanks for the update, Sam
What, no love for Telekinesis and Michael Benjamin Lerner on drums?
No offense, but check out Sat-n-Pepa, circa 1989 (eg: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3HA1jlLwTD0) — sometimes a cover leaves you wanting the real thing instead.
Portland Cello Project has done a cover of this for quite some time. Thao has collaborated with them. Perhaps that is where this idea sprang from. It is a shame I couldn’t find the PCP version right away, as it is superior. I recommend you dig around on the series of tubes for it.
This is not clever, important, interesting or necessary. Lame, actually.
