The eerie, verdant clip for Bon Iver’s “Towers” features an old man (and yes, the sea) hauling a net out into the blue. Definitely Where The Wild Things Are (the movie) vibes, like this dude is the extremely aged Max who never escaped the monster island. Since I’m starting to freak myself out, I’m going to stop now! Bon Iver is out now on Jagjaguwar. It won a Grammy, or something.

This is a fine video. I think it’s mysterious and intriguing and very well done. But this is going to do nothing to defend Bon Iver against accusations that their music is boring and terribly uncool.

It’s a damn good looking video for sure. Very good stuff.
I never really got the boring accusations. I find it to be pretty engaging and interesting music. Sure it’s quiet and somber at times but I don’t see anything wrong with that. I get the sense from some people that if the music isn’t loud, in your face and racing by at break neck tempos than it’s no good. Perhaps these accusers are speed metal fans? Though I suppose it’s just a sign of the times and these people have some important place to be and are too busy to relax and listen to some dulcet tunes.
Then again, maybe I’m just an old man who doesn’t get it.

Guys, settle down. I’m not the one that is calling Bon Iver boring and uncool. I’m just stating the fact that there are large groups of people that first heard of him at the Grammys that have come out swinging with accusations. These are people that think he should have lost to Skrillex, so it would probably be impossible to prove to them that Bon Iver is anything other than a boring old man. But it’s not going to improve his image to have the first thing he releases after that be a video about an old man that very slowly doesn’t do a whole lot of anything.
It doesn’t much matter though. Because it’s very apparent that Bon Iver doesn’t care to defend himself; and thank God for that. Can you imagine if he had instead released a video for “Towers” where he was riding in the back of a limo with a bunch of naked babes? Can you picture that?
I take it all back, that would have been awesome…
The limo-and-pimp business is for when he rolls with Yeezy. He’s his usual reserved self during the day job.
