Chicago folk-blues wailer Willis Earl Beal has a voice that seems like it shouldn’t belong to a person alive in this century — a fiery, possessed, devil’s-chasing-me Old Testament groan. Below, we’ve got video of him playing an entire 36-minute set in Berlin, backed only by a reel-to-reel tape player when he’s not singing entirely a cappella. Watch it below.
Beal’s album Acousmatic Sorcery is out 4/3 on XL.

This is just incredible. And with a toothpick in his mouth!
Damn
Perfect. Somebody build a time machine and get The Funk Brothers behind this man, ASAP.
It’s good but he started losing pitch on the last song. He’s got a cool voice, but it seems like all the songs are going to be the same.
