Odd Future

Last night, Odd Future played a show at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom. And for the first time ever, the long-absent Earl Sweatshirt joined them onstage, to general pandemonium. Earl disappeared to a Samoan reform school almost two years ago, just before Odd Future made their internet-addled breakthrough; they weren’t even playing shows when he left. And it’s a whole lot of fun to watch him get to soak in all that adulation for the first time, and for the rest of the crew to enjoy the moment. Below, we’ve got video of Earl making his onstage return and performing his freestyle over Gucci Mane’s “Lemonade,” as well as “Kill,” and the whole crew doing the posse cut “Oldie.” Watch it all below.

I’ve long wondered how Earl’s dense super-raps would work in the context of Odd Future’s anarchic live show. Turns out: Really well!

  1. Saw this show last night. Started with OF playing clips of their adult swim show on a huge projector for the crowd… there were a few funny bits but I’m still not sold on that ish, kind of like a trying-to-hard T&E. Thought the beginning of the concert was lukewarm, was actually gettin into Mike G’s (a member I’m barely familiar with) stuff more than anything.. Hodgy and Tyler were screaming a bit too much and both seemed to have lost their voices.. somehow Hodgy sounded great eventually. It can get pretty grating having 5 hype men on stage at a time, though it seems like they’re getting better at giving eachother more space – occasionally the majority of the crew would disappear to give 1 or 2 members the limelight.

But when Earl came out it was incredible. Dude carries so much command and presence in his small frame. And he sounded so on point it was like he must’ve been listening to his tracks on repeat while in Samoa. I had my hopes he would show up after seeing that Rosenberg interview from the other day but still really couldn’t believe it when Earl busted into Orange Juice. Transcendental may be the only word to describe it. Or badass.

They performed a ton of material (maybe too much), almost two hours’ worth, Tyler addressed the crowd warmly, and they did that encore with a bunch of Earl tracks (where we also heard Frank Ocean spittin over “Oldie.”) Overall a fun experience for my first OF show that would no doubt have been improved if I was observing from standing room rather than a balcony. That being said, I probably won’t go to another one. It makes me kind of self-conscious being part of a crowd made up primarily of teens and preteens at 24 years old.

Thanks for letting me publish my capsule review and continue my tradition of bloated OF posts.

  2. This show alone might have fucked up the sleeping habits of other up-and-coming rappers

  3. They know how to shake up the crowd just like in this vid of the Minneapolis tour:) http://bit.ly/zFJ6VL
