Battles – “The Yabba”
Spazzed-out math-rock titans Battles return next month with their all-instrumental album La Di Da Di, the follow-up to 2011’s Gloss Drop. And after debuting a few songs in a recent live session, the band has finally let the world hear the studio version of one of those songs. First single “The Yabba” spans seven minutes, and it’s a slow-building krautrock lurch that incorporates all these nervous electronics and squiggly rhythms, taking its time to kick into anything truly seismic. Monster drummer John Stanier only really gets to drop the hammer at the end — but then, holy shit does he ever. Rolling Stone just posted the song alongside an interview with the band, and you can hear it here.
La Di Da Di is out 9/18 on Warp.
