Small Black – New Chain

|Small Black - New Chain

With "Bad Lover" and an eponymous EP, Small Black introduced themselves as the new project from the men behind Class Of 2006 local natives Slowlands. Since then, the band's gone on a press-positive tour with (along with performing as backing band for) Washed Out, ushered in another affiliated project into our consciousness with the promising Psychobuildings, and signed to indie juggernaut Jagjaguwar. As they told Jessica during a Progress Report, their forthcoming debut full-length New Chain was set to tape in Delaware, at the home/studio of their bassist Juan Pieczanski (aka Juan's Parents' Basement). Here's the first snapshot from their time in that tax-free land, titled "Photojournalist"; it's still synthpop, filtered and hazed, yes, though Josh Kolenik's vocals strike a little harder. Not enough to disrupt the charm of their intimate hush, or the way they work with the keyboard mix, but enough to make you focus on the melody a little more than before. Nice beginning to the new chain:
