It would maybe be unfair to Ray LaMontagne if the last image you had of the man was making vaguely embarrassing pickup lines in Meg White’s general direction (to recap: “Baby you’re the bomb. Oh Jack is great, don’t get me wrong. But this is your song,”), so why not take a listen to Lewiston Maine’s answer to Jack Johnson in a more “Crazy,” horn-y, and “soulful” mode via “You Are The Best Thing.” The songs’s from Gossip In The Grain. That title has nothing to do with Beth Ditto.

He’s clearly singing about Meg again. As he was in “Let It Be Me.”

Gossip In The Grain is out 10/14 via RCA.

  1. Love it. Hearing a little Van Morrison influence.

  2. Been playing the hell out of this one already on the radio. It’s a shame that album got bumped to next week when I was planning September all along. Still? Nice to hear him taking some new directions. You can go wrong with a horn-y song.

  3. Can’t go wrong that is. CAN’T. Sheesh.

  4. I’m liking what I hear from this album, can’t wait to pick it up. Til the Sun Turns Black is a modern masterpiece and one of my absolute favourites from this decade.

  5. This is the best love song of 2008, no contenders. Too bad the video is such crap.
