Not everyone (anyone) agreed with VH1′s 100 Greatest Hip-Hop Songs. Let’s see what happens when they talk about folks with guitars. Before we dig in, though, it’s helpful to understand what they’ve counted as “hard rock,” so keep in mind that the five-part television version was hosted by Bret Michaels and that Winger, along with Skid Row, Scorpions, Ratt, and, of course, Poison made the list. My dad is currently searching for a corner to die in after seeing Evanescence beat out Jethro Tull.
Seriously, guys?
In VH1s defense, this was voted on by the viewers. So shame on us?
Not exactly. This is VH1 staff’s list- they don’t leave countdowns like this in the hands of viewers (if for no other reason than label politics), but ask for “help” on the website to make it seem populist
Oh, then ew.
Makes sense.
ahh… thank you then, to all the label exec reps, for their, erm, $uggestion$
They should not have chosen Runt o the Hills by Iron Maiden, it is no where near their best song, they have sooo many great that destroy Run to the Hills. Also who ever voted for Welcome to the Jungle to be number one needs to be hit in the face with a shovel. Also why the fuck did Megadeth only get 51 on the list? They destroy most of the bands on this list. And then there is the fact that they chose Enter Sandman, i mean, Rock Band much? Back in Black or one of the many greats by Zeppelin should have been number 1.
I agree “hit in the face with a shovel”!
I know
whoever says Twisted Sister beats Megadeth has to be kicked in the balls
and why did they pick Peace Sells?
they should have picked train of consequences or kill the king man
they prolly didnt choose em cuz there not popular singles dumbass…thats the point of this list
the list wasnt which is the greatest band…
the point of this list was “The 100 Greatest Hard Rock Songs” and there are a shit load of bands that get lucky and only have one great song… the point wasnt which band makes better music or which band has been out longer.
and everyone in the top 15 with the exception of nirvana had great hard rock songs other then the ones where listed on this list
and the one thing that would make this list better is if they just dont pick singles, put other songs from the bands. Like GNR Nightrain or Mr brownstone, metalicas seek and destroy or 4 horsemen, megadeths tornado of souls or kick the chair, there could have been more Aerosmith and zepplin and thats just some that i could think of.
i can believe they put back in black above metallica, and all megadeath could be the first half of the songs, and guns n roses could have took the last half including no.1.
I agree completely with Rigo.
Oh, and another point. TRUE ROCK’N'ROLL FANS DON’T TALK SHIT ABOUT ROCK BANDS THAT MANAGED TO SCORE A HIGHER PLACE THAN THEIR FAVOURITE BAND.
Ugh, there, I said it. So since when did Rock N Roll become so… Ugh, fuck it.
All this ego and hate is really not what this was suppose to about. Everyone has their own opinion.
black sbath so awesome they qualify 2 time Xb
Too right mate, Megadeth owns most of this list, along with what you listed, Guns N’ Roses is a bunch of shit they don’t have anywhere near the longevity of Megadeth, AC/DC, or Led Zeppelin, they suck.
you suck, AC/DC and GN’R is the best ;)
acdc rocks! gnr will never rock like ACDC
esxactly !!
Most of these list suck. Welcome to the jungle number 1? they can go F()@K themselves. And why aren’t’ there any songs by queens of the stone age, and why is megadeth 51, and why is acdc # 2? that band deserves a 99 sort of place on this list!!!
You seriously think that GNR doesn’t deserve number 1? The band that, if it wasn’t for pop, would have fucking ruled the world of music for about five years in the later eighties. and ACDC, u think they should be 99? How about their the best god damn rock n roll band of all time. its AC fucking DC dude, u gotta respect ‘em, there so badass with thier blues riffs, and their vocals, and the incredibly solid work of the rhthym, bass, and drummers working together.
u are such a bitc if you think that Guns ‘N’ Roses dont deserve to be #1 u must be stupid. And if ACDC should be in #99 you should just jump of a building or shoot yourself…. You are sooo stupid GNR and ACDC are the two best bands of all time you bitch
Man what is your proiem, those bands are what made ROCK/ROLLwhat it is today.AC/DC still kicking serious ass. Megadeaths kool but were wanna be’s. All there’s sound the same. So GET YOUR SHIT STRAIGHT…..
its not ur top 100 list idiot
It’s a hard rock list, not a heavy/thrash/speed/power metal list.
So Maiden, Metallica and Megadeth have nothing to do here.
Where was Yes? I
so you want to hit, Slash, Ozzy Brett Michels, Zakk Wylde Ted Nugent in the head with a shovel? This is a hard rock list NOT HEAVY METAL. THERE IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE
Rage againist the machine?????? Slayer??????? Pantera????? TOOL???? Slipknot????
System of a down????
whoever is the idiot that posted this comment needs to be lit on fire and then punched in the face and then raped by michael jackson b/c how the FUCK COULD YOU THINK THAT THOSE BAND COULD EVER EVEN BE MENTIONED IN THE SAME LIST THAT CONTAINS THE WHO, LED ZEPPLIN, METALLICA, GUNS N ROSES, ACDC, AEROSMITH, VAN HALEN, DEEP PURPLE, KISS, AND IRON MAIDEN YOU STUPID FUCK I SERIOUSLY COULD KILL YOU YOU FUCKING EMO LITTLE BITCH WHY DONT YOU GO CUT URSELF BUT CUT UR THROAT AND BLEED TO DEATH YOU STUPID LITTLE FUCKING BITCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You idiot!!!! tool Emo?!!! what tha fuck are you thinking!!!!!!! seriously, Tool is one of the greatest bands ever, R.A.T.M. have so many good songs !!!!! PAntera as well. The bands you mention are great but some others in the countdown mmmm beting this others I don´t think so
ok the bands u listed r the the shit hands down they r but cum on man rage against the machine and pantara should b on the list now idk like tool so i’m with u there but y is cowboys from hell not on here cuz i saw somthin of the top 10 best metel bands and pantara was 6 and i think seen people like green day on here slipknot should have been cuz there more HARD rock than green day…..and y ant mudvayne on here
Slipknot is (I’m only guessing the sub genre) death metal.
You have absolutely no idea what death metal is if you think Slipknot would ever be considered a death metal band
ok the bands u listed r the the shit hands down they r but cum on man rage against the machine and pantara should b on the list now idk like tool so i’m with u there but y is cowboys from hell not on here cuz i saw somthin of the top 10 best metel bands and pantara was 6 and i think seen people like green day on here slipknot should have been cuz there more HARD rock than green day…..and y ant mudvayne on here
That is rude on so many levels…everyone has their own opinion and they are entitled to it. I dont agree with alot of the list either but Im not going to bash people on here because of their opinions.
discohippie_90 = Right
haha…thats an awsome rant man…good taste in music
I can tell your a stuck up prick that thinks that their music is superior. None of those bands are my favorite but you really can’t listen to the bass line of Bulls On Parade or the guitar riff to Cementary Gates and deny that they knew what they were doing. So to idiot, you are rightfully named.
Word, except I’m ODing on heroin in my corner. This is the kind of crap I’ve come to expect from VH1, MTV, Rolling Stone and so forth. I love and adore Hendrix but “Hey Joe” is NOT a hard rock song. Purple haze would have been a better choice, if any.
Evan
http://www.beyondrace.com
umm…maybe magic carpet ride. and definitely more ac/dc and zeppelin. not too good vh1
I hate lists. they are always stupid
see a real hard rock list
check out led zeppelin, any song they released was harder then gnr. slash sucks. and for anyone who hates this list, i would reccomend not checking out the rolling stone top guitarists. haha. oh boy. fucking 80′s glam and gay metal is not HARD! FUCKERS
The beatles rock harder then half the people on the list. wtf. Helter SKelter, one of the hardest songs of its time. cant believe sunshine was so like not in the top 20 at least.
whatever, listen to coltrane. fuckers
Grow up and accept it. IT is hard rock, been to one of their concerts b4? OR have you just gone to a stupid death metal concert with death circles and death walls, yeah that shows real intellegence……. Not. The beatles are you for fucking real?
I love pop culture lists even though they inevitably disappoint me. Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion, but if you’re trying to put together a definitive list as VH1 apparently tried to do, then at least get the basics covered as well as including a few of your personal favorites. And ANYONE who has heard The Beatles’ “Helter Skelter” and doesn’t have his head up his ass can tell you that it’s one of the true classics of hard rock. Considering it came out in 1968, I think a case could be made that that song (as well as Blue Cheer’s “Vincebus Eruptum” album) actually helped introduce heavy metal to the masses. Believe it or leave it alone, folks!
I liked the show. But why anyone gets angry at these lists is beyond me. I guess they only do it because they want something to be angry at. I agree some of the songs weren’t even close to hard rock but people have to grow up and accept these lists for what they are. I mean come on. There are so many different people out there that like different kinds of music and believe some bands deserve to be on it more than others and believe that this song should be #1 over this song etc… There’s no way in hell to please everybody. Could they have made a better list? Absolutely but it’s all for entertainment value. People find what they believe is a huge mistake in a list that’s so wide open because everyone has different viewpoints on different bands and different kinds of music, and then they complain about it. And someone who believes that some band being left out of the list is a tragedy may not be agreed upon by everyone. To sum it up all I’m saying is that you have to accept it for what it is and take it with a grain of salt.
Well, also a big rip off is Rush only having one song in the list!
They should have about 5 at least and all in the top 50 easy!
Absolutely agree!
you should shut up and get your head out of your a**!!!! i work with a canadian and she doesn’t even like rush
this list sucks ASS!!! WHOEVER MADE IT IS A IDIOT
FOR MANY REASONS!
Megadeth is at 51… why they should be 20 or lower… they kill most bands on this list
why is Nirvana num 7.. there a good band but they do not deserve that rank…
Enter sandman is a mediocore song… metallica has way better songs… they could have picked anything from kill em all, justice, lighting, n puppets but no fucking main stream media have 2 ruin it all….
i cant even believe marilyn manson made it on this list… he sucks… really
i am also certainly disgusted how bands like greenday, twisted sister, and iron butterfly made higher ranks then MEGADETH, and anthrax
this is really one of the worst music lists ive ever seen gj VH1 u idiots
I´m totally agree with you
I agree with El Diablo…How was Creed’s Higher on there and the Number of the Beast not???? This a HARD rock list. Why was Creed even on there? And Crazy Train was #23 after Bon Jovi???
ur dad sucks and so does ur mom she is a whore now shut the fuck up
Besides, evanescence is FAR better than Jethro tull will ever be
Nirvana in the top ten? There’s a shocker.
I would go ahead and rage about Evanescence and Andrew WK both beating out Aqualung, but this list is bananas. They should just call this list 100 favorite Guitar Hero songs.
LED ZEPPELIN STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN NOT THE LIST WHAT THE FUCK ABOUT THE LIVE VERSION OF DAZED AND CONFUSED
Bawitaba over Search and Destroy? I can’t stop vomiting.
i almost threw up when i saw welcome to the jungle was number one.
dude first of all guns n roses has to be one of the best bands on the planet. but yes, i think they shouldve gone with “paradise city”
dude this list effing sucks but they did make a good choice about Nirvana, foo fighters and evanescence but honestly more than half of these songs aren’t even hard rock its just stupid ass guys in leather pants who thing they’re metal just cuz they did drugs and r now complaining about it…boo hoo
Yah, fuck you. Welcome to the jungle IS THE BEST SONG ON THE EFFIN PLANET.!
&& GUNS N’ ROSES IS THE MOST KICKASS BAND EVER.!
Damn, you really wouldnt know good Rock N Roll if it bit you in the ass.
Thats fuckin pathertic.!
GNR sucks because of Axle Rose.. What a dick head thinking he is a rock & roll singer? Can’t stand the band or their lead singer>>>
To allow myself to get stirred up by these bullshit lists is beneath me… I’ll say I knew one thing …Kiss was better with the make-up and actually had really good taste in terms of influences… to listen to the last segment of small faces “I’ll feel much better” is to hear the earliest sound of Kiss. The Move figures into this to whick brings up Cheap Trick,,, give me fucking break Vh1….
so hard rock is anything that uses an electric guitar, right? that’s the only connection I can draw between a couple of these bands
Alternately brainless and interesting. For instance, I didn’t expect Motorhead on the list at all, let alone in the top ten. Way to go, VH1! Oh, uh Give It Away? Boooo on you, VH1!
Nice to see: Faith No More, MC5, The Stooges (wrong song), “Mountain Song.” “Would?”, “Cult of Personality”
Curious inclusions: “Hey Joe” (over voodoo chile and countless others???), Blitzkrieg Bop”, “Black Hole Sun”, “Interstate love song”, Green Day
Shame on you!: Bon Jovi, Creed, Sammy Hagar, Buckcherry, “Free Bird”, The Final Fucking Countdown??!?!?!??
In sum, it seems like they had no real criteria for what “hard rock” means, and also didn’t do a very good job of choosing the songs, but some people at least had some interesting ideas.
Warrant > The Kinks
thanks for that….needed a chuckle
Please don’t get too upset at this list. It’s like an e-mail from your grandma listing her 100 favorite LOL Cats. Far too late to the game, she just doesn’t understand the medium, technology, or continence. It’s adorable, quaint, and a little depressing.
My brother and I were sure “Iron Man” was going to be number one. We were even both betting that it would win, so if we lost we would just burn out money. We didn’t actually burn our money, but we’re still pissed/shocked. I mean, “Welcome To The Jungle” is a great song, but I would never say it completely embodies the soul of hard rock. Give me a break, VH1.
Lesson 1…the game is fixed.
Actually I thought it would be number one as well. It was number one on 100 greatest METAL songs. I’m okay with it not being number 1 but I’m definitely not ok with it not even being on the list. And I totally agree with the other comments…quite a number of the songs on the countdown were NOT AT ALL HARD ROCK!!
A few stray observations:
-I, like many here, am cofused as to what constitutes hard rock. Since when is White Stripes, Nirvana, and Smashing Pumpkins hard rock?
-Evanescence has no place on this list or any list that contains the words “Best” or “Top”. Amy Lee is just a poor man’s Amanda Palmer.
-Do The Donnas even make records anymore? Or do they just profesionally appear on VH1 list and I Love the.. shows?
The Clash – “Should I Stay Or Should I Go”…. really?
This list was clearly compiled by voting done at a retard farm!
My uncle works on the retard farm you bastard
No Bohemian Rhapsody? If there is only one song in the world that I can be allowed to bang my head to, that would be it.
Maybe, but it is a proven fact that an artist can only release ONE song that cracks the top 100.
I’m saying, BR should have been at the top or at least near the top of the list. To make matters worse, Queen isn’t even mentioned at all, WTF??
i totally agree. how the fuck is stone cold crazy on this list but bohemian rhapsody not! that is total bullshit.
More QUEEN!!!!
No Manowar at all in this list.
Aerosmith and Nirvana are better hard-rock group than Deep Purple, Rainbow, Kiss, Jethro Tull, Scorpions and Iron Maiden?
they should better write the list of the best porn sites.
BUCKCHERRY!!!!!!
any list that has creed in it loses all credibility
Amen Steve!! Creed is nowhere near hard rock. Let alone a good band!
Amen Steve! Creed is most definitely not hard rock. Let alone a decent band!!
This is the best list I have seen in a while!
No, Stereogum, please, start the new year off right. No more lists…pleeeeeease.
Not bad… at least creed go in there!
Anyone else notice how shitty most lists are?
Very safe list. Calling 90% of these songs “Hard Rock” is a misnomer (if such a genre even exists), unless that qualification means having long hair and at some point a member of your band shot heroin into their dick.
they didn’t even pick the best clash song.
Never thought I’d see a list that includes bands like Led Zeppelin, The Kinks, The Clash, The Who and Jimi Hendrix along with Evanescence, Creed, Ratt, and Buckcherry…
I think these lists are alright, and it is insane to think they could please everyone. So my two cents: Smashing Pumpkins should have been higher and where is NIN?
No Pantera!? I kept watching and listening to Bret Michaels spout off all his rocker party boy bullshit and no Pantera! Fuck it all.
VH1 showed up too late to the party and subsequently could not nail any drunk chicks, only the ficus in the corner.
This list is shitty.
People questioning how they made this list obviously don’t watch a lot of VH1 (That would be a compliment). This is VH1′s rules for making these types of lists:
1) “Hard Rock” is defined as every piece of guitar-based music that wouldn’t fall under the category of “Soft Rock”, which by VH1′s definition, means Phil Collins and everyone who could draw comparisons to Phil Collins.
2) Recognizable to the average VH1 viewer (meaning either a Top 10 hit or a piece of music that is frequently used as a pop culture reference joke on one of the other VH1 programs)
3) A large chunk of which must come from the 80s, particularly Hair Metal because VH1 refuses to give up the notion that the 80s weren’t both awesome and hilarious, no matter how much evidence to the contrary (The Horribleness of the 80s is to a VH1 viewer what evolution is to a Creationist).
Under these rules, this list makes perfect sense.
es muy stupido.
Where is Pink Floyd????
My eyes actually teared up a bit when i saw welcome to the jungle was number one when there were ten better songs on the list than it
Hey it’s my impression of Bret Michaels on the countdown show:
“That song ripped my head off and devoured its innards, and I just might have pissed my pants. You’re gonna love this song, it’s some kick-ass in-your-face kick-ass straight-up rockin’ kick-ass rock ‘n’ roll. Check it out.” *awkward swaying* *anxious stare*
No surprise with the list quality. Overall, just plain sucky. But I mean admit it, almost all of us find watching these countdowns to be guilty pleasures. Until you reflect upon it and realize that you just wasted 5 hours of your time. Just be thankful “Through the Fire and Flames” wasn’t #1. I almost expected it.
Where is anarchy in the UK?? or Wish by NIN?? I think it was more important for VH1 to included as many different groups as possible.
This list sucks ass! I’m fifteen and this shit is embarrassing. Where is Dream Theater, and one fuckin hendrix song? Hell there could even be some godsmack on here and some more metallica and iron maiden
Aldo Nova- Fantasy not on the list, I thought this was supposed to be a list of 100 HARD ROCK songs. This list is a list of 100 Rock Songs plain and simple.
So Korn and Kid Rock are better than the Stooges? Sure VH1, sure.
wheres the RATM?
rage for life
These lists always have htis & misses. this one proves the point. Welcome to the Jungle # 1??? Please! Ok to include on the list but # 1?
And they got the wrong Hendrix song- by far. At least they got in Sabbath, the Who and Deep Purple.
But Poison # 40? Buckcherry included? Well, I guess it had to be so- given who made the list. The Final Countdown makes the list but Cheap Trick’s Surrender doesn’t ? Hello?
Lots to argue about but what the hell, it’s just a list.
You know this list blows when it doesn’t have
-”March of the Pigs” by Nine Inch Nails
-”Testify” by Rage Against the Machine
-”Killing in the Name of” by Rage Against the Machine
I would consider “Communication breakdown” by zep and “paranoid android” by radiohead
I can agree with ur suggestions.I would aslo reccomend:
Meat Loaf-”Bat Out of Hell”
David Bowie-”Ziggy Stardust”
Derek & The Dominos-”Layla”
Bruce Springsteen-”Born To Run” and “Born In The U.S.A”.
The Clash-”I Fought The Law”
The Doors-”Light My Fire”
Tom Petty-”American Girl”
Wolfmother’s “Woman” would have been a good choice 2.
i swear half of these songs are rehashed from their 100 greatest metal songs list. Are they hard rock, or metal? Pick a side, VH1!
Hell yeah. ‘Killing in the Name of’ should have made the list.
Buckcherry? What?
93 Autograph – “Turn Up The Radio” – Higher
86 Marilyn Manson – “The Beautiful People” – 50 Spots Higher, great song
85 Velvet Revolver – “Slither” – Higher and add Sucker Train Blues
69 Living Colour – “Cult Of Personality” – Underrated
51 Megadeth – “Peace Sells” – Prefer Symphony of Destruction
46 Anthrax – “Madhouse” – Prefer Caught in a Mosh
41 Quiet Riot – “Cum On Feel The Noize” – Higher for a hard rock anthem
23 Ozzy Osbourne – “Crazy Train” – Could be #1
13 Def Leppard – “Photograph” – Top 10
10 Motorhead – “Ace Of Spades” – Could be #1
04 Black Sabbath – “Paranoid” – Could be #1
VH1 has been trying to bring back hair metal for years now. With the Metal Years documentary and by punishing stupid whores by making them compete for Brett Michaels TV boner. The format is.. 5-8 shit bands.. someone legitimate to make you keep watching.. thinking it will get better. The criterion for Hard Rock is obviously.. from the collective will of Rednecks from my small town watering hole. In a world where “Talk Dirty to Me” is considered to be more rocking than “Search & Destroy” Do you know where you are?..you’re in the jungle baby.. you’re gonna die!
“Hey Joe” is a good Hendrix song but not his greatest. “Machine Gun” is the real bomb and the guitar solo is one of the best of all time. The radio didn’t play this track often as it is about twelve minutes long. any rocker thats worth his or her salt knows that this is one of the finest guitar driven pieces of its time.
fuckcherry…ugh
Not bad for a Vh1 list, but of all the ZZ Top songs to pick, why pick Tush? There’s always Sharp dressed man or one of those other great songs with great videos.
Evanescance blows more than a porn star, as does Green Day, and it would be great if Vh1 would come out and finaly admit that they don’t put legitimate songs on in order to give other bands a chance, because there are at least 10 songs I would put on this from Ac/Dc, Zeppelin, Hendrix, and Van Halen (No way in hell Running with the devil is their best song, not even the best off the album)
I don’t know much about “hard rock” but I know that this list was CRAP! What I do know I got from my brother and I know that there were some on there that just weren’t hard rock at all… and some bands/songs missing… NIN??? HELLOOOOO even I the 50s and 60s pop and psychedelic and folky stuff lover knows that one! The entire list just reminded me of stuff my aunt listened to when she was in her late teens and 20s… so pretty much 80s hair bands…. and I’m sorry… Bret Michaels?? Anyone seen the slutty whores on his bus? Thought his first and second crews were bad, this takes the CAKE! You can’t help but watch these whores and wonder how people like that actually exist for real…
This list was bogus… i mean honestly. if it’s supposed to be a list about HARD ROCK songs… maybe they should limit it to HARD ROCK songs?!?!? many bands on the list are in no way hard rock. Nirvana(grunge) Bon Jovi(pop/rock) Maylin Manson(metal) Iron Maidden(metal) Jimmi Hendrix’s ‘Hey Joe” is blues ZZ Top could be considered country Evanescance is goth metal Green Day is punk Black Hole Sun is in general an odd song Van Halen is glam rock Buckcherry just sux Quiet Riot was a cover of an original hard rock song and Poison is also metal. Metal and hard rock are two diffrent genres and should not be on the same list. Plus (no offense to fans) a lot of the older songs can’t really be put in the same catagory. their just rock. They can’t compare to songs like “Back In Black” or “Crazy train”. And Where The Fuck is PINK FLOYD?????? one of the greatest bands int the world and they don’t make the list??? “Won’t Get fooled Again” should have made top 5 and if we’re talking GREATEST HARD ROCK SONG of all time…. like it or not it should be Deep Purple’s “Smoke On Water”. if only because it has the greatest rift and its so good that everyone knows it from birth. this list was crap and i think they should have another one where REAL PEOPLE vote… not the assholes who work for VH1 and appaently have know idea what hard rock is and what a bands best song is.
You misspelled “no” lol
2% – The amount of shit I give.
this is one of the worst VH1 lists ever i mean welcome to the jungle #1? that isnt even the best song on that album Sweet Child O’mine blows that song away that should b in the top 20 also Iron Man should b the #1 song and crazy train shouldnt b all the way back at 23 that should b in the top 10 it is horrible all around
01 Guns N’ Roses – “Welcome To The Jungle”
lol
i think you are dumb because any led zep, ac/dc, the who or hendrix song is 20 times better than any gnr song
First off…many of y’all are retarded. “Hard Rock” encompasses ANYTHING HARD!!! This includes punk, metal, grunge, etc….
Second, this list is total bullshit because it seems as no band was allowed to have more than one or at the absolute most 2 songs…(Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, The Who, and Van Halen). I can think of more songs from each of those bacnds that are better than Creed, Evenescence, the White Stripes, W.A.S.P. and Night Ranger.
How about “Thunderstruck” (AC/DC) – “Black Dog” (Led Zeppelin) – “Jamie’s Cryin” (Van Halen) – “Master of Puppets” (Metallica) – “Purple Haze” (Jimi Hendrix) – “Man in the Box” (Alice in Chains) – “Foreplay/Longtime” (Boston)…I could go on forever. All of these songs should have been included but weren’t because a band can apparently only have one song…
Now how about the bands that didn’t even make the list??? How about “Cowboys from Hell” (Pantera) – “Mississippi Queen” (Mountain) – “Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo” (Rick Derringer)….
Unbelievable and unacceptable on VH1′s part…they can all suck one.
On a brighter note it was nice to see “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” by Iron Butterfly. But it shouldn’t have been 24th….
Dude, you spelled “bands” wrong.
Your mom encompasses anything hard.
NICE!!! but yeah this list is terrible garbage, Jimmy Buffett rocks harder than 50% of this bullshit
i agree they should have included mississippi queen, definitely.
?? ?????? ???????? ??? ????????? ???? ???????!?????? ????!????? ?? ??????????? ???,?????? ?????????????…..
That’s easy for you to say
Bull crap More than a Feeling could rip apart GNR alone
I’m usually a “glass is half full” kinda guy when it comes to lists. In this case, more like the glass is 1/20 full.
Buckcherry? the only list they would top is the most played at a strip club.
Loved the comments, hated the list!
TOM SAWYER!!! FUCK THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!!
One of the best songs ever.Rush Rules.
Nobody drums like Neil dude!
C’mon…Cherry Pie? Even the lead singer hates that song.

Eh, well, after looking at all of the horrendously shitty lists of Rolling Stone, this list is not nearly as bad. But, it sounds like everybody hates this list and I honestly give it a C+. Of course, there are some bands that are PURELY Hard Rock (AC/DC is probably the all-powerful God of it) but a list of just a few bands with several songs would get boring…trust me. And, many of you are confusing “best hard rock” songs with “best songs”. These are, in VH1′s opinion, the best “hard rock songs”. In no way does it mean that Buckcherry is a better band than Pink Floyd. And, another thing is that we all have biases before hand anyway. If this list was up to me, I would choose a bunch of Queen songs considering they’re my favorite band and I know nearly everyone of their songs. But that doesn’t mean that everybody else knows all of their songs. This list was made for the average human being that would at least recognize most of the songs. Welcome to the Jungle is a better “hard rock” song than Sweet Child o’ Mine even though I like the latter more. Putting it first is VH1′s choice and if you have a problem with it, make your own list and have people bitch at it saying there’s not enough of their favorite band and too much of a genre that they hate. Before I watched this program I didn’t even know that Hard Rock was considered an actual genre (I still don’t think it’s an actual one) but just a combination of what’s in the list (classic rock, metal, punk, grunge, shit [Buckcherry]).
What was vh1 on when they compiled this list? I mean, seriously? Buckcherry? Huh? Evanescence is not even hard rock!! As for all the people out there whining about ‘Where’s Pantera? Where’s the Sex Pistols? Where’s NIN?” Uh, Pantera is metal morons…Sex Pistols are punk, duh…and NIN is not hard rock…They are kind of a mix between industrial and rock, but not hard rock…Anyway, I did not expect Welcome to the Jungle to win at all..I mean, I love GnR and all, but even I was kind of miffed at it reaching the top spot…There were so many other better songs..
Evanescance? WTF if they wanted to go with a new song then what about linkin park or slipknot killswitch engage? I agree with most of the list but where’s ratm or audioslave? Seriously chris cornell is a godly vocalist! No slayer? Korn lost to green day? Queen isn’t in the top 10? Some of this list is fucked up
Lists like this are published so you can argue about them. Personally I think Led Zeps Kashmir should have been number one. But who am I but another POV.
No, it’s okay, I agree. Kashmir is my favorite Led Zeppelin song. And it actually fits the “genre”. Right about the arguing too. It’s kind of funny to watch them bickering though. But the list just isn’t good. No rhyme or reason.
I think they had good bands, wrong song choices for 2 of them. For ZZ Top, La Grange should’ve been there and not Tush. For The Cult, remove the Love Removal Machine and put in Fire Woman, that song’s aweseme.
I really do feel this was basically a Rock Band/Guitar Hero list to appeal to the masses who don’t understand rock music as a whole. There were a lot of great songs on the list that changed the face of music, but there were also many that didn’t belong. I just chalked it up to the fact that this was a list made by people that don’t fully understand and the list I would have made would have been much better, but still a lot of you wouldn’t like my list either because everyone has different tastes in music and ideas about what hard rock is. It’s still fun to agree with some of the songs and disagree terribly with others, but in the end VH1 will never make a perfect list because they’re too mainstream a lot of the time and their countdowns don’t represent what America actually thinks. Also, the list wouldn’t be as interesting if the hardest rockers had all of their songs represented, it’s cool to have 80 or 90 some different artists/bands on the list even if one doesn’t agree with them all.
This list has NO songs by one of the greatest hard rock bands ever: Tool, which means it’s completely void.
Plus, they don’t even play these kind of songs, do they? It’s been like 5 years since the last time my remote control failed in that channel.
WAIT! my above comment is unnecessary… they have “The Darkness” in the list. *gags*
what the hell? Led Zeppelin had to be first! “Seven Nation Army?” I consider that song borderline “hard rock”. “Dead Leaves on the Dirty Ground”, “fell in love with a girl”, those are songs I “bang my head” with more. “Everlong”" Is this the same “Everlong” I have heard? that slow song? hardly hard rock. “Hey Joe?”, its got great guitar licks but I’ts not hard rock! “Manic Depression”, “Fire”, any other hendrix song would have been fine but hey joe, “hey joe” belongs in the “100 best rock solos ever” list.
Tom sawyer is great.2112 even better.
I might as well add one more theory as to how VH1 decided the list!
i think they thought about it for all of about 38 seconds, then decided it was going to be too hard, so they wrote down a bunch of songs, each on it’s own paper plate, pasted them to a wall, got plastered and threw darts to pick the order. i mean that’s the only way this list would make sense to me.
Hey….where was Paradise City by GNR?
The Scorpions- Rock You Like a Hurricane.
fucking ridiculous!!!!!!!!!!!!!
on a list with velvet revolver and evanesence where the hell is disturbed?
if any recent band should be considered hard rock it should be disturbed seeing as their guitarist was in a dokken tribute band for part of his music career.
Hell yeah, Disturbed belongs all over this frigin list. I don’t understand how you could leave them out.
I still don’t understand why Stp’s “Wicked Garden” isn’t on here. And not even 1 Nine Inch Nails song???? And shit like Buckcherry is on here? What is wrong with people? I think steriods in chickens could be a possibility. Despite all the bullshat, I’m glad to see that Motorhead, Iron Maiden, and GnR made it high on the list. It’s a sign of hope.
GRINGOS HIJOS DE PUTA
This list = EPIC FAIL!
You= Epic Fail
foo fighters?
who said they were hard rock…
really no TOOL THATS crazy and no Rage!!!!! guns and roses at #1 thats dumb!!
Maynerd>>>>>>Axle Rose
barracuda is the worst song of all time
You are on crack! Those chicks rock harder than most men.
Where is Bohemian Rhapsody!!!??? Needed some more Hendrix. More songs from Metallica, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi.
Bon Jovi does not rock. They are a simple chick band, with simple lyrics and simple riffs and leads. They do not belong here anymore than Autograph or Europe or Buckcherry, Poison or especially FUCKING WINGER in front of AIC.
This list is a fucking joke. It has to be.
I think my name says it all
where the hell is down with the sickness?!?!?!?!?!?! Creed is on this damn list but no Linkin Park? KID ROCK is on this list? SERIOUSLY???
An awful list in so many respects as many have mentioned. But lets talk about great hard rock by a female,,,,,,where’s Joplin? Piece of my Heart and Ball and Chain by Big Brother out rock Joan Jett, Leta Ford and the Runaways all day long. What about the Pretenders?
Did you notice how many of the commentators had songs on the list? I think being available to make inane comments was the only reason Sebastion Bach and Buckcherry made the list.
Hendrix gets one song and not even in the top 10! What the hell has become of us!!!
dude this list is good and its shit. heres how i see it…
fist off……..WHY THE FUCK IS GREEN DAY IN THIS LIST AT ALL!!!!!!!!!!! ESPECIALLY OVER CLASSIC HITS LIKE THE FOUR THAT ARE STRAIGHT ABOVE IT… I MEAN THATS NOT EVEN HARD ROCK THATS JUST CRAP… AND IF THEY WERE GONNA CHOOSE A GREEN DAY SONG IT SHOULD’VE BEEN BETTER AND AT ABOUT #700
NEXT HOW COME ALL THE GOOD BANDS ONLY HAVE 2 SONGS IN THE COUNTDOWN?!?!?! THIS IS GREATEST HARD ROCK SONGS NOT THE HEY LETS BE FAIR COUNTDOWN AND GIVE EVERYBODY A CHANCE…. THATS BULL… LED ZEPPELIN SHOULD HAVE 4 OR 5, AC/DC SHOULD HAVE 6-7, VAN HALEN SHOULD HAVE 4-5, METALLICA SHOULD HAVE 5-6, PEARL JAM COULD HAVE A FEW AND FREE BIRD SHOULD AT LEAST BE IN THE TOP TEN….. FOREPLAY/LONG TIME IS A HARDER SONG THAN MORE THAN A FEELING BUT I THINK BOTH SHOULD BE ON THE LIST…
ALL THE SONGS THAT SHOULDNT EVEN BE IN THIS COUNTDOWN
GGGGRRRRREEEEENNNNN DDDDDAAAAAYYYYYY SHOULDNT BE ON THIS COUNTDOWN, NEITHER SHOULD JOAN JETT OR CHERRY BOMB,….. KICK OUT THE JAMS??? WTH IS THAT IVE NEVER EVEN HEARD OF IT!!! AND HOW IS KID ROCK RANKED OVER OTHER CLASSIC SONGS??? PHOTOGRAPH BY DEF LEPPARD SHOULDNT BE UP THAT HIGH AND HEY JOE SHOULDNT EITHER IT SHOULD BE ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER AND PURPLE HAZE OR FIRE OR SOMETHING IN THIS… AND EVANESCENCE SHOULD BE UP IN THE 700S WITH GREEN DAY
I SORTOF AGREE WITH WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE AT THE TOP BUT THERE ARE DEFINITELY HARDER SONGS THAN THAT LIKE MASTER OF PUPPETS I THINK SHOULD DEFINITELY BE ON HERE AND MAYBE AT #1, BACK IN BLACK COULD BE #1,WHOLE LOTTA LOVE SHOULD PROBABLY BE DOWN CUZ ITS NOT THAT HARD AND MEGADETH OR MAIDEN OR SOMETHING SHOULD BE THERE… NIRVANA SHOULD BE 10-30…. RUNNIN WITH THE DEVIL AND HOT FOR TEACHER SHOULD BE SWITCHED… YOU GOT ANOTHER THING COMIN SHOULD BE UP THERE TOO…
SONGS THAT COULD BE #1
MASTER OF PUPPETS
FREE BIRD
STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OTHER BANDS THAT COULDVE HAD MORE SONGS
TED NUGENT
GUNS N ROSES
SABBATH
QUIET RIOT
JUDAS PRIEST
BOSTON
JIMI HENDRIX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GREATEST GUITARIST EVER?!?!?!? HELLO?!?!?!?!
THE LIST COULD GO ON AND ON AND IT DEFINITELY WOULDNT LOOK LIKE THIS!!!!!!
BUT WATEVER THE PPL VOTED FOR IT SO I GUESS ITS THEIR FAULT
SHITTY ASS LIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Judas priest are more metal tbh
true man green day isnt rnr but i cn ignore one song
therest is pretty gud but where is jimmy hendrix and knockin on heavens door
While i do not agree with GnR making number one, and some others on the list, remember the list is opinion thats it, not everyone would pick the same song for number one, i mean everyone has differnt tatses. I thought it was still a good show, just because they did have a lot of great songs on there i could care less where they placed them. I guess im just saying dont let someones, or really a networks opinoin upset you
I have a feeling that this list was just made so it could promote rock band and guitar hero because more than half the songs on this list are in rock band and guitar hero.
I agree. These countdowns are really nothing but songs put on guitar hero and made so to advertise the game. also there are bands that shouldnt be on it (buckcherry, evanescence), wrong songs by mots bands (bohemian rhapsody, communications breakdown). just be happy through the fire and flames wasnt anywhere on the list. I almost expected that as well. yeah they can play really fast but that doesnt make you good. what makes you great is the ability to do more with your skill, different styles.
this list is bull where are all the good queen songs???!! htf does welcome to the jungle end up at number one and bohemian rapsody, another one bites the dust, we will rock you, any rage against the machine, system of a down, i could go on but i wont, dont even make the list!! thats what happens when corporate bull gets in the way. i was excited when i heard about the list but i was just a giant bust!!
Ratm are mostly Alt rock or Rap rock and SOAD are mostly metal
Beh. I blocked VH1 from my TV years ago. Saves time when I’m flipping through the channels and it cut out those brief flashes of Bret Michaels mug when I’m trying to watch Simon & Simon and Tom & Jerry reruns at the same time. The channel’s just a soap/talksoup/E network for older people who were never really into music to begin with.
The only decent things to come from VH1 were Behind The Music (which wasn’t all that great) because it inspired a hilarious parody for The Simpsons; and Pop Up Video, *That* shit rocked (and I think it was also parodied briefly on The Simpsons as well).
i think that everyone should stop beating on this poor list.
everyone’s views are different.
but, really, vh1…
just, no. i’m disappointed in you.
there are some good songs in here, yes.
not that i honestly expected much else.
i’d have certainly edited out most of the hair metal…
it’s just so…
eh.
but pink floyd should have without a doubt have been somewhere on here.
and i was prepared to bet money on number one being stairway to heaven.
yeah, it’s way over played.
but it’s great. this is a list of the greatest…
it entertained me.
that was great.
i guess.
where is the motley crue!!! sure they have dr.feelgood, but I don’t think that should be on there. In the 80′s the crue ruled!! what about the song “looks that kill” or “shout at the devil.” whatever! all I know is guns and roses should have never made it a #1.
i totally agree dr. feelgood is the one of the best album in rock n roll history
how its posible ?,that ?the song cherry pie by warrant its place in the list , cherry pie its very similar , like a copy to pour some sugar on me by DEF LEPPARD and pour some sugar did not appears on the list!!!!!!
welcome to the jungle!!!! number 1!!!!!!!!????????? thats like my second favorite song in the world but i think they should have put “knocking on heaven’s door by guns n roses
Led Zeppelin should dominate the top ten of this list. The fact that they are arguably the greatest rock band of all time, not just hard rock, alienates a small percentage of the metal fans. Though they generally love them, some don’t consider them pure metal (which of course they were not). They remain a category unto themselves. Where are: Black Dog, Communication Breakdown, Immigrant Song, Dazed and Confused, Heartbreaker, Rock & Roll???? Though this list contains some great songs, it is generally weak because of the glaring Zep omissions (among others), and the inclusion of so many horrendous tunes that should not be even mentioned in company of great rock tunes.
Where the F was DANZIG?????????
Please explain how the band Sweet was completely overlooked…..Does Action, Fox On The Run, and the repeatedly covered Ballroom Blitz ring any bells?…….Then again I’ve never seen one of their videos on VH1 Classic……They must have issues with them…..
Bret Michaels hosting guarantees poisen makes the list.Bandana hiding Bald ass Bret.PoisOn is as hard rock as Barbara Streisand. Now let me go puke………
Are you kidding me? “You Shook Me All Night Long” by AC/DC and “Sweet Child O’Mine” by Guns N Roses aren’t on the list? These are the best, most popular hard rock songs ever! Without these songs, this list means nothing!
I think a few years ago VH1 had this same countdown, but I believe nirvana was at number one. What happened? Were they just like “Well…..GNR released a cd this this year, so lets put one of the older tracks at number one.”? Whatever.
We should make our own list. “The hundered greatest hard rock songs that didn’t make VH1′s hundered greatest hard rock songs of all time” list.
