Last night’s Shins show featured an interesting line-up: No Marty Crandall? Also no Jesse Sandovol on drums, although the keyboardist’s absence is more likely to be the focus of internet conjecture. Rounding out the lineup were Eric Johnson on keys (Fruit Bats), Ron Lewis on bass (Fruit Bats, Ghost Stories, Grand Archives, etc.), and an unrecognized drummer. It was the second show on the Sub Pop-free band’s May tour of the coasts, and our photographer Laura Musselman tells us the new crew sounded tight, if missing Marty’s energy. Couple of new tunes, and a nice spread of the old in this setlist:

    Missing Marty’s energy….

the last thing the Shins need live is more missing energy.

James kicked them out. He wanted to play with other people. Weird, I know.

A week and a half ago I saw James and Marty hanging out in a Portland bar, drinking some beers together. Did get the impression that they hadn’t seen each other in a while (huge bear-hug when they departed), but they seemed like the best of friends. My drunk roomie dialed up ‘New Slang’ on the jukebox, they didn’t even flinch.

delta spirit’s got any energy that the shins are missing.
    love those guys.

  4. Le Shins are great, thanks for the review.

  5. Wasn’t Marty kicked out because of the alleged fisticuffs with his ex-girlfiriend Elyse?

  6. The Shins are the worst band ever. Just kidding. I love them. Just kidding. I hate them. Their songs are so puffy and powdery. Just kidding I love them. Their lyrics poignantly polish off the small humor of life. No, just kidding. I hate them. No, I love them. No, Natalie Portman and Zach Braff ruined it. I hate them. No, no. Who cares what they think or what anyone else thinks? I love them.

Drummer = Joe Plummer of Modest Mouse

  8. Rocky  |   Posted on May 5th, 2009

The “unrecognized drummer” is Joe Plummer (Modest Mouse, Black Heart Procession). New lineup – really stellar musicians and with stellar vocals. Exciting turn of events.

  9. I think the drummer might be Joe Plummer, from Modest Mouse. I’m not sure though.

There are a few songs on the set list that I don’t recognize at all such as Double Bubble and Fool Of A Martyr. Are these new songs by The Shins?

Shame about James kicking the guys out btw, I really liked them.

I would kill to see youtubes of the new lineup doing these songs. Would love to see Sea Legs and Past and the Pending, which is rarely played live.

  13. great show. and I think this is the most times I’ve ever appeared in the shadows of a stereogum photospread.

Delta Spirit Kick so much ass!!!

  22. Gratefulfred  |   Posted on May 6th, 2009

Does anyone have a set list from the Tuesday show? (And Evan: I would love a copy of the show…)

  23. Last night’s (Tuesday) show was the most disappointing show I’ve been to in years. Absolutely no energy, muudy sound, no volume (what with that?). I actually left about 40 minutes into the set, it was so pathetic. Fortunately, Delta Spirit saved the evening. They put The Shins to shame.

  24. Last time I saw ths Shins (in Seattle!), they covered “Strange Powers” by the Magnetic Fields. I have looked all over a mp3 of this. Are there any to be found?

  25. There are no Shins without Crandall.

The 2009 Jeff Tweedy award goes to….

  27. great setlist, nonetheless

  28. Anyone have the setlist from the 5/5 show?

  29. James Mercer is a great songwriter. I remember the Shins live performance on SNL which was lacklustre. My guess is they were scared stiff being on live TV but you would have thought they would be more lively. Hopefully any new line up will only further energize the already top level music. Is it me of does James sound just a bit like Robert Smith?
