Seeing as this has already been Beirut week on Stereogum.com, I'll save my trademark purple prose in dissecting this show for the Year's Best Concerts post in December. Except for the next bunch of graphs because, really, it seems this... CONTINUE READING BEIRUT & THE VASSAR ORKESTAR @ BAM, BROOKLYN 2/6/09»

The second installment of Guilt By Association comes out in February. In case you don't remember Vol. 1, the compilation featured contemporary indie bands covering so-called "guilty pleasures." Of course, the problem with these sorts of things is that the... CONTINUE READING TAKKA TAKKA COVER PHIL COLLINS »

In this Heretic Pride era, John Darnielle's getting involved in some interesting collaborations. His work with Aesop Rock might have felt more left-field, but despite knowing the Mountain Goat's a big fan of Kaki King, a collaborative EP was unexpected.... Dreaming Of Revenge has definitely been a big step for Kaki King -- as illustrated on tracks like "Pull Me Out Alive and 2 O'Clock," she's moved beyond the "guitar prodigy" thing to a straight-up solid, inventive songwriter. (Remember, she... CONTINUE READING NEW KAKI KING VIDEO - "AIR AND KILOMETERS"»

Maybe some of the festivals we've been announcing are too loud for the folkier souls out there (Devendra). If that's the case, the Newport Folk Festival just unveiled their '08 lineup and new Dunkin' Donuts-free name. The longstanding fest's 49th... Like the Polyphonic Spree before her, STD awareness crusader/six-string master Kaki King strings together thousands of still photographs to form a beautiful music video. (In the Spree's case it was 70,000 while Kaki's working with around 5K, but then DeLaughter's... CONTINUE READING NEW KAKI KING VIDEO - "PULL ME OUT ALIVE"»

After citing Maxim's no-listen review of the new Black Crowes LP, blogger-Kinney launches into a couple of her own. Carrie goes deep on Kaki King's Dreaming Of Revenge: "'Life Being What It Is' is King at his best, while 'Open Mouth' is King even better than he usually is. 'Air and Kilometers' is a beautiful song about traveling in a plane in a country that uses the metric system and 'Montreal' is about a city in Canada." Also she notes that Wye Oak's If Children is "Whitney Houston's 'The Greatest Love Of All' except angrier and totally against mid-wives."
We'd hire her! But both Maxim and Carrie need to remember that when it comes to phony reviews David Cross is not afraid of you and will beat your ass.
