Andy Stack and singing waitress Jenn Wasner were responsible for one of our favorite sets at CMJ last year. The new songs they played got us psyched for the Baltimore duo's sophomore LP. Now six months later we can share... CONTINUE READING NEW WYE OAK - "TAKE IT IN"»

The crew here managed to fly through some 70+ sets of music last week, and boy is our abilty-to-wade-through-the-sadness-that's-passing-for-buzzed-up-indie-rock tired. There's a very scientific formula to attaining that coveted "Guess I should see this band 'cause everybody's saying I should"... CONTINUE READING STEREOGUM'S TOP 8 FROM CMJ '08»

Joining the Tobacco triumph a few days earlier, Mercury Lounge hosted a couple more of my favorite sets this fest in the recently revitalized (and recently Mangum-ized) Music Tapes, and Baltimore breakout Wye Oak. The successive sets were a contrast... CONTINUE READING CMJ '08: THE MUSIC TAPES & WYE OAK @ MERCURY LOUNGE»

The people of Austin are nice enough to welcome thousands (and thousands) of vagabond music fans into their city for a few days each year, so we decided to pay their stomping ground homage with a friendly game of Texas... CONTINUE READING SXSW: STEREOGUM'S TEXAS MUSIC TRIVIA - ROUND 1»

Baltimore's Wye Oak play hushed, sometimes loud, always lush pop. It's refreshingly tough to pin the duo down, but not in some over-eclectic, pseudo-avant way. It's also refreshing to say they legitimately know how to write songs with great hooks.... CONTINUE READING QUIT YOUR DAY JOB: WYE OAK»

After citing Maxim's no-listen review of the new Black Crowes LP, blogger-Kinney launches into a couple of her own. Carrie goes deep on Kaki King's Dreaming Of Revenge: "'Life Being What It Is' is King at his best, while 'Open Mouth' is King even better than he usually is. 'Air and Kilometers' is a beautiful song about traveling in a plane in a country that uses the metric system and 'Montreal' is about a city in Canada." Also she notes that Wye Oak's If Children is "Whitney Houston's 'The Greatest Love Of All' except angrier and totally against mid-wives."
We'd hire her! But both Maxim and Carrie need to remember that when it comes to phony reviews David Cross is not afraid of you and will beat your ass.

The female-fronted Baltimore duo Wye Oak used to be called Monarch. Wonder if they changed their name after being confused with Monarch!, the female-fronted French doom band? No confusion, really: The noisy, swirling, multi-layered, shoegazing pop of Jenn Wasner and... CONTINUE READING NEW WYE OAK - "WARNING"»
