New Port O’Brien Video – “I Woke Up Today” (Stereogum Premiere)

Port O'Brien's love of the open seas is authentic, and they continue the ship theme in the Blake Behnam-directed video for the excellently rousing All We Could Do Was Sing standout "I Woke Up Today." This time, though, they're stuck on a fake boat, Van and Cambria and crew vulnerable to the whims of a little girl's imagination, as she transforms her toy into the real-life Port O'Brien on a toy ship. Each player gets a sitcom-style shout out before the band does battle with a cardboard ocean, seagulls-on-a-string, someone in a shark costume, and a dude in a speedo. All the while, they maintain their hectic, joyous, infectious song and dance.

Cute. The video was filmed in LA and Big Sur, and we were told the LA parts were shot at a porn soundstage in Koreatown, that they had to hightail it out of there because there was a Hustler shoot taking place after their production. Yeah, don't want the kid seeing that. There's no risk of running into Hustler with this version:
