KEN Mode – “The Promises Of God” (Stereogum Premiere)
Most people respond to success by relaxing a tad. For a noise-saturated metallic hardcore band like Winnipeg’s KEN Mode, winning a Juno Award — Canada’s version of the Grammies — qualifies as success on an unimaginable scale. After beating out the likes of Anvil and Devin Townsend for the 2012 Metal/Hard Music Juno, you’d think that they’d take a breather.
But with song titles like “Your Heartwarming Story Makes Me Sick,” “Secret Vasectomy,” and “Why Don’t You Just Quit?,” KEN Mode’s aptly titled upcoming album Entrench sounds even more hostile and frustrated than its predecessors. We’ve got one track from the album here, “The Promises of God,” which builds up to a scary stop-start drubbing at the two-minute mark before deploying a spoil of KEN Mode’s recent successes: a guest vocal spot from Dave Verellen of mathcore legends Botch. Give it a listen.
