My Morning Jacket – “Leaving On A Jet Plane” (John Denver Cover)
As a huge Mark Kozelek fan, I can’t help but wonder how one goes about assembling a John Denver tribute album in 2013 and doesn’t find space for a Kozelek rendition; is it because he put out his own Denver tribute back in 2000 (featuring Low, Bonnie Prince Billy, and THREE Red House Painters tracks)? True, the new ATO Denver tribute, The Music Is You, features a bunch of worthy artists, including J Mascis with Sharon Van Etten, Lucinda Williams, and Evan Dando — all of whom about balance out the fact that Train is on here, too. My Morning Jacket open the album with a gentle rendition of “Leaving On A Jet Plane,” on which they make a sad song even sadder. Listen.
