Mavis Staples – “Can You Get to That” (Funkadelic Cover) (Feat. Jeff Tweedy)
Three years ago, the great Chicago soul and gospel legend Mavis Staples released You Are Not Alone, the comeback album that Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy produced for her. In a couple of months, she’ll follow that up with her new LP One True Vine, another full-length Tweedy collaboration. (I’m going way out on a limb and guessing that the title has nothing to do with Twitter looping-video apps.) Staples recorded the album entirely at Wilco’s Chicago studio the Loft, and Jeff and his son Spencer play almost every instrument on it, which aww. The album includes a cover of Low’s “Holy Ghost,” which comes from another recent Tweedy-produced album, this year’s The Invisible Way. And below, we’ve got a stream of Staples’s lovely version of Funkadelic’s stone-classic loping Maggot Brain singalong “Can You Get To That.” Listen to it and check out the One True Vine tracklist below.
