Os Mutantes – “Ganjaman”
The great Brazilian psychedelic band Os Mutantes returned from a 35-year absence in 2009 with their eighth LP, Haih. Now, they’re set to release the follow-up to that one, Fool Metal Jack, with lyrics written almost exclusively in English. We’ve got one song from that new album now: “Ganjaman.” The breezy, bright track has a notable reggae influence — perhaps befitting its title — but its lyrics are … kinda bizarre. As far as I can tell, it’s a fable in which giants from American politics rise from the grave to correct our course via zombie revolution. A sample:
Thomas Jefferson will raise from the dead for a new revolution/ the Kennedys will come back to us out of their deadly reclusion/ marching down with Luther the king across the Pennsylvania Avenue
Still, it’s a gorgeous jam on a warm spring day, the likes of which we’re experiencing in NYC right now. Give it a spin via Noisey.
