Colin Stetson – “Among The Sef”
On Colin Stetson’s new album New History Warfare Vol. 3: To See More Light, “Among The Sef” comes right in the middle. Stuck between two extremely powerful songs featuring Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon, this track bridges the gap between his demonic shouts on “Brute,” and the angelic crooning of “Who The Waves Are Roaring For.” “Sef,” works well as a bridge, but also as reminder (between two strong vocal tracks no less) that while Stetson works incredibly well with collaborators, even alone the man could out-play a small band.
While “High Above a Grey Green Sea” was all rumbling menace, “Sef” shows off the high registers of Stetson’s sound beautifully. Over a flurry of shrill high notes, he lays out rushing percussive sounds and makes his saxophone scream and moan in a way he’s done so well in the past. Like some of his best songs, it blurs a line between sounding anxious and triumphant; though by the halfway point the latter seems to win over, it could really go either way and still “Sef” would be an absolute victory. Listen to the song here and check out our recent interview with Stetson.
