Passion Pit – “It’s Not My Fault (Hands Remix)”
Both the world-beating, Coachella-resplendent Passion Pit and the world-entering, ascendant Hands have a had busy time in Southern California these past few weeks. I can attest, having caught both bands in the space of five days: Hands in LA during their Echoplex residency; and Passion Pit in Palm Springs in a casino parking lot with thousands of high schoolers and seniors, like every single day. Both impressed, and the basic elements of Hands’s set in their backyard — earnest pathos delivered with a big voice, set to dancefloor rhythms — were the ones ricocheting around Passion Pit’s Palm Springs lot. (This was also my first time seeing Passion Pit since Scott and I caught them at the first show of their own residency, at Pianos in 2008, and despite it being a quick free show, I was floored by, if a bit proud of, how far they’d come on every level.) So this remix links Hands, who are about to release their full-length Kill Rock Stars debut Synesthesia (featuring the great single “Trouble“), with an act that represents, in broad strokes, the best-case scenario for their own career. “It’s Not My Fault, I’m Happy” from Passion Pit’s Gossamer is a heavy track in theme set to some twinkling production that earns the album its name, and in Hands’ hands, the five-minute cut gets an additional minute, a different sort of production gleam, and a lot more house.
